Are you a skilled communicator with a passion for driving change? Do you want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those struggling with problem debt? If so, you could be the UK’s leading debt charity’s new **Public Affairs Officer** at a time when making the case for action to tackle problem debt and its root causes has never been more important.

StepChange is the largest provider of free and independent debt advice across the UK. We employ over 1,000 colleagues and our frontline services have helped over 7 million people on their journey to becoming debt free, while also campaigning for public policy change.

As Public Affairs Officer, you will play a key role driving forward our strategic influencing and engagement work to ensure that StepChange builds strong relationships with key decision-makers, and that our influencing priorities are heard and acted on.

The role is an important part of our small but successful policy and public affairs influencing team. With the support of the Parliamentary and Public Affairs Manager, you’ll implement ambitious lobbying campaigns, organise events, and ensure the charity proactively sets the agenda on driving support for the most financially vulnerable.

Based in our London office (at least 2 days per week), with the opportunity for hybrid working, your strong communication skills will enable you to quickly get to the heart of important social policy issues, and your excellent relationship-building skills will grow the charity’s reach and profile at Westminster and beyond.

Your sound political judgment and previous experience of working in a campaigning or public affairs environment will be invaluable. You do not need to be a debt expert, and we will provide support to develop your skills and knowledge where needed.

If you have a passion and enthusiasm for campaigning, building strong relationships and commitment to our vision of a society free from problem debt, we’d love to hear from you.

**What you will be doing**
- Working collaboratively to support the development of our strategic influencing plans
- Delivering high quality impactful communications across a range of styles to support engagement with key stakeholders, including letters, speaking notes and briefings.
- Building the charity’s relationships with Ministers, MPs, Peers and other key opinion leaders to ensure our policy messages are heard at every level.
- Maintaining an accurate picture and up to date information on the charity's key external stakeholder relationships.
- Organising events and visits to engage influential stakeholders, including as secretariat to the APPG on Debt & Personal Finance.
- Representing the charity externally, including in Parliament, and contributing proactively to meetings and events.
- Reporting on current political debates around debt and consumer credit issues and identifying opportunities to further StepChange's key influencing priorities.

Further information can be found in the attached job description / role profile.

**What we want from you**
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to win over those with different perspectives and agendas.
- Experience of making sound political judgments, and a clear understanding of how to influence decision-makers in Parliament and Government.
- Excellent written communication skills (to write letters, briefings, etc) and the ability to adapt complex information for different audiences.
- Highly organised, able to manage own time, and work under pressure to achieve against tight deadlines.
- Excellent numeracy skills.
- Plenty of initiative and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Genuine interest in and understanding of some of the broad social policy issues that affect people in debt

**What we offer you**

We don’t just care for our clients and those people who contact us for help. We also value our colleagues, and this role comes complete with a generous benefit package which includes:

- 24 days annual leave (this increases by one day per year up to a maximum of 29), plus bank holidays
