This is an exciting new post set up to support complex, hyper acute patients aligned to sub-speciality pathways at the Grange University Hospital, including brain injury, major trauma and patients who step down from critical care. As this is a new role within Occupational Therapy service, there will be need to be emphasis on developing the role linked to service requirements and demands, establishing professional and clinical networks to ensure alignment to core pathways such as the Major Trauma Network, non-stroke neurological and critical care provision. Therefore, experience in service development, including setting up new clinical pathways and leading others through change will be key.
We are looking for a flexible, innovative and highly motivated advanced practitioner, with a key interest in developing the evidence base through research, service improvement and evaluation to support the delivery of Occupational Therapy. We are looking for a practitioner who will work to the top of their license to innovate and lead clinical developments within the assigned field of practice.
- To demonstrate an advanced knowledge base in the assessment and intervention for people admitted to a specialist acute hospital, supporting a range of sub speciality pathways inclusive of major trauma, critical care step down and non-stroke neurology.
- Utilise advanced knowledge and skills from a varied clinical background, including in a neurological setting, to assess, treat and manage a varied caseload on multiple wards.
- Identify and prioritise the people who will be most likely to benefit from occupational therapy intervention.
- Independent, confident decision making and clinical reasoning with a complex and varied caseload.
- Support seamless transition of occupational therapy care on step-down from the critical care unit.
- Plan discharges home directly from the Grange University Hospital
- Work jointly with the multi-disciplinary team on the unit to optimise the impact of occupational therapy.
- Identify and implement changes to support the development of this emerging role and service.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Developing occupational therapy management pathways of non-stroke neurological step down patients will be a priority as part of the establishment of this role following the reconfiguration of ABUHB Stroke rehabilitation pathway, therefore an interest and skill set the within the field of neurology is desirable. We also have the aspiration of developing an ‘all age’ pathway response in relation to major trauma provision, with occupations being at the core of our interventions, which makes the scope, depth and breadth of this role is both exciting and innovative in nature.
Extensive clinical experience of rehabilitation, inpatient services, neurology and major trauma is essential along with advanced communication and engagement skills. You will be expected to work as an integral member of the MDT and as part of the wider Occupational Therapy team across ABUHB, to deliver high quality, evidence based occupational therapy intervention with individuals would have experienced a significant event requiring a specialist acute admission into hospital.
