The Role & Key Responsibilities

The post holder leads, as Senior Investigation Officer (SIO) for this Major Crime Investigation, and is accountable to chief officers for the conduct of the investigation. The exact nature of the investigation is confidential and will not be divulged prior to appointment.

The SIO manages the investigative response, all resources associated with the investigation, develops and implements strategies, procedures and systems that underpin the investigation and ensures the management and assessment of threat, risk and harm is accurate and effective.

The SIO ensures that all reasonable lines of enquiry are completed, and that a proportionate and effective investigation is conducted.

The key accountabilities are:
Develop and implement short and medium-term objectives within the investigation as part of the overall investigative strategy and engage with other force departments, units and agencies to enable a collaborative approach to managing investigative strategies and evidence gathering and build community confidence.

Supervise and evaluate the performance and conduct of the operation to ensure the investigation is carried out thoroughly and expeditiously in accordance with investigation policy, ethics and relevant legislation, policy, and best practice.

Manage budgets and resources and take corrective action where required to ensure the investigations are completed in a cost-effective manner.

Lead, inspire, and develop the performance of a team of investigators, providing coaching, support, and feedback where required to deliver team objectives and ensure the welfare of staff.

Develop and maintain strong relationships, partnerships and community relations by providing a service that is responsive to the needs of all communities engaged in and by the operation, in accordance with partnership agreements.

Develop plans for operations and coordinate activities and initiatives arising from the operation, also implementing change plans where require, to contribute to reducing, preventing and detecting major crime.

Develop and implement plans for witnesses and victims to ensure they are offered support and care, taking into consideration safeguarding issues, during the investigative process, adhering to applicable guidance and legislation.

Enable information and evidence sharing with due consideration to the need for information security to ensure the secure handling and dissemination of intelligence to progress the investigation.

Undertake comprehensive risk assessments for planned operational events to ensure adequate safety procedures are in place and that an appropriate contingency plan has been developed.

Conduct intelligence-led briefing, tasking and debriefing, ensuring that intelligence is used ethically and is appropriate to the duties being performed and in accordance with Force policy to support the achievement of community safety and crime reduction objectives.

Support the briefing of and liaison with the media individual, or by a PIP4 when necessary, acting in accordance with media policy guidelines, to keep the public informed of developments in a particular investigation and as an investigative strategy for appeals.

Be responsible for demonstratable proportionality in the conduct of the investigation, the lines of enquiry set and followed, and the level of research conducted in to any individual or organisation.

Skills & Experience

The essential skills for the post holder are:
Current accreditation to PIP3, or have held PIP3 accreditation in the last three years.

Significant experience in conducting major crime investigations as SIO.

Awareness of HOLMES or Major Incident room standardised administrative processes for effective case management.

Experience of making challenging decisions using appropriate
