Assistant Catchment Adviser

Corfe Mullen, United Kingdom Wessex Water Full time

Have you got a passion for the environment? Do you have a background in agriculture and an understanding of soil and nutrient management? If so, and if you have excellent communication and organisational skills, we have a great role for you in our Catchment Delivery Team as an Assistant Catchment Adviser.

This role will be based at Corfe Mullen in Dorset and will involve travelling across south and west Somerset and North Dorset.

**The role**

As an Assistant Catchment Adviser, you will liaise with farmers and landowners in priority catchments to raise awareness of water quality issues, provide advice and support with nutrient, manure and soil management, as well as assessing the suitability of land for nature-based projects.

As well as providing farmers with advice you will also promote, coordinate and support the delivery of catchment-scale diffuse pollution reduction projects which will reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels in water. This in turn will benefit Wessex Water by reducing the need for treatment for these contaminants at our treatment works.

As an Assistant Catchment Adviser, you will co-ordinate a grant scheme that rewards farmers in priority catchments for adopting farming practices which result in lower nutrient and pesticide losses to water, particularly phosphorus in surface water.

This will involve:

- producing agreements for each farm, sending them to the farmer, and ensuring the return and filing of agreements.

Within the role you will gain a thorough understanding of the catchment where you will identify and prioritise water quality risks using catchment risk assessments to determine local risks to water quality. You will also have the opportunity to assist the Catchment Science team with sampling and data collection/interpretation.

**What do I need?**

To be successful you will be a confident communicator with previous experience talking to and dealing with the farming community, as well as being able to provide excellent written reports. You will be able to effectively manage your time and workload to deadlines and have the willingness to proactively learn and keep abreast of industry, sector and legislative developments relevant to the role.

In addition, you will have/be:

- an interest and experience working in the agricultural industry
- a relevant degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in agriculture, environmental science or a related discipline
- knowledge of farm environmental improvement
- confident in the use of IT packages, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc
- numerate, with experience in information management and interpretation using appropriate tools, such as spreadsheets and databases.

It is desirable, but not essential for you to have:

- an understanding and experience in agri-environmental work and grant/funding schemes (eg, environmental stewardship)
- knowledge of soil, nutrient and manure management
- basic hydrological and hydrogeological understanding
- experience using Geographical Information Systems.

Due to the nature of this role and the requirement to travel to different sites and catchments it is essential you hold a valid driving license; a company vehicle will be provided.
