The Pharmacy Technical Services Department have a vacancy for a Band 2 Assistant Technical Officer to work within our unit. This post will involve supporting our specialist facility where you will assist in the preparation of injectable medicines of both a hazardous and non-hazardous nature. The post holder will be required to support the delivery of a variety of pharmaceutical products around the Royal Cornwall Hospital site and occasionally off site so a full, valid, manual driving license is essential to enable the successful applicant to drive the department vehicle.

Under the direction of senior staff act as a validated dispenser for the manufacture of a range of sterile injectable medicines which will include hazardous products such as cancer chemotherapy agents or radioactive materials, and less hazardous products such as nutrition and aseptic medicines. These medicines must be appropriately labelled for individual patients with advice and instructions for storage and use. This will require moderate effort in a restrictive sitting or standing position, often for prolonged periods, whilst maintaining high levels of concentration and accuracy during preparation of injections, using isolator barrier technology.

Conduct all activities using a high degree of attention to detail ensuring that all work is compliant with local and national standards including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and be proactive in identifying improvement opportunities and more efficient ways of working.

Participate in assembly and labelling activities associated with non-sterile medicines

Support transport duties covering delivery of products to include hazardous and non-hazardous materials both internal to site and occasionally off site.

Assist with stores management and stock control activities.

Assist in cleaning and environmental monitoring duties associated with maintaining appropriate levels of cleanliness with the Pharmacy Technical Services Unit ensuring required maintenance activities are carried out.

Have good levels of manual dexterity, hand eye coordination and strength to support the preparation of sterile medicines and cleaning activities daily.
Highly developed physical skills, high levels of accuracy important, manipulation of fine tools and materials e.g. syringes, needles and vials, as part of excellent aseptic technique processes.
Be able to communicate effectively and accurately both verbally and in writing with a range of people at different levels both internal and external to the Trust.
Communicates information to other staff, including staff outside of pharmacy, overcoming barriers to understanding through clear communication.
Using their judgement to problem solve and find solutions when presented with challenges such as stock or prescription unavailability.
Be competent in the use of Microsoft office-based computer programmes. Able to demonstrate own duties to new or less experienced employees
Can plan their own daily tasks and those of support workers to meet service requirements. Be able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work patterns to meet changing service needs.
Can work as part of a team or independently as required, following the appropriate pharmacy standard operating procedures and escalates appropriately to their supervisor when required.
