Assistant Herdsman/woman

We are a 3rd/4th generation dairy farm who have diversified into milk processing and Ice cream production. We currently use all our own milk and are investing in the future of dairy farming despite the current uncertainty in the future.

The farm currently milks up to 110 cows in a 6/12 herringbone parlour with ACR's.

A new building to house 150 cows with an underground slurry storage, AD plant, using LELY milking robots is currently under construction.

Our current staff consists of 1 full time, 3 part time staff (20 hours per week) and one old man This structure can be altered to suit any new routines and there is allowance for future positions.

Job duties include assisting the herd manager in the following tasks.
- Managing the team to make sure that daily jobs are complete to a high level.
- Ensure all farm staff are fully trained for current routine, be able to implement new actions/training procedures. i.e. a clear understanding of new calved cow and antibiotic procedure.
- Manage the milking rota, ensuring all milking cows are milked twice a day at a reasonable split.
- Maintain milking parlour and associated equipment to a high standard, this includes servicing at correct intervals.
- Being responsible for daily used items such as feed, medicine, chemicals, PPE, tools to ensure the farm can run safely and efficiently.
- Ensuring milking cows are fed at the correct time for maximum performance.
- Ensuring cow accommodation is clean and maintained to a high standard.
- Making sure all youngstock are checked, fed, healthy and bedded (where appropriate)
- Manage all reproduction/ fertility of current breeding herd and future heifers.
- Manage all cow health, including footbath schedule, vet visit, foot trimming routine etc
- Bringing the cow records and procedures up to a modern level allowing all staff easily access.
- Be capable of operating tractors, feeder wagon and telehandler.
