Phlebotomists will be expected to provide a helpful and professional service to patients and healthcare staff within the Trust

We are looking for individuals with the skill and flexibility to support our services on the Outpatients and Trust wards and on occasions the Mobile service.

The individual will be responsible for ensuring that the blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the patient and that laboratories are provided with timely, high quality blood specimens taken in tubes that are appropriate for the tests requested.

Two years Phlebotomy Experience is a specified criteria

Having a blood test done is often an essential step in a patients diagnosis or treatment and the care we give makes a real difference to this journey.

To take venous bloods safely from patients on the wards, outpatient and the Phlebotomy Bus.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our phlebotomy team.

Two years phlebotomy experience is essential.

This will be mainly based at the Churchill but on occasions may be asked to work at other sites.

On occasions this post will require the member of staff to travel to other hospital sites within Oxfordshire

The applicant must have a full driving license and access to a suitable vehicle.

Skills/Responsibilities

To take venous bloods safely from patients on the wards and outpatient departments.

To check the identity of the patient, ensure than any special instructions have been followed (e.g. period of fasting) and to gain patients consent to proceed.

To take venous blood of good quality using aseptic techniques and ensuring minimum of pain and discomfort to the patient.

To make sure samples arrive at the labs safely

To work within a team and also lone working,

To work with a computer on wheels using the EPR system

To work in an efficient manner to ensure the phlebotomy work is completed in the best practical time.

To obtain and keep up to date with all learning

To ensure that safe working practises are maintained in the interests of both staff and patients according to Trust and Departmental policies

To co-operate with strategies to reduce cross infection

To make judgements regarding the viability of taking blood.

Good sound general education

Experience & Knowledge of phlebotomy is a specified criteria

Understand the principles of patient confidentiality

Previous healthcare experience

A knowledge of the importance and relevance of phlebotomy in the deliverance of patient care Skills & Ability Essential Desirable

Good interpersonal skills and able to communicate with patients and healthcare professionals

Basic IT skills

Competent, professional and polite manner

Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment

Ability to work with attention to detail

Degree of manual dexterity required

Good organisational skills

Able to convey a calm, caring and sensitive attitude to patients and their carers

Ability to work individually or effectively as part of a team

Ability to follow set procedures and protocols meticulously

Ability to concentrate for long periods

Ability to cope with routine task

Able to use initiative and act with mínimal supervision in accordance with protocols

Willingness to work flexibly to maintain phlebotomy service

Ability to drive with access to a car, this is essential
