Personal Assistant/support Worker

**Personal Assistant to Disabled Man**
**Job Type**: Part-time, Permanent, Self-Employed
**Salary**:£29 per hour
**Expected Hours**:8 - 18.5 hours per week (job-share)
- Due to the nature of the role, I can only consider applicants aged over 22 years, this is an occupational requirement and therefore exempt from schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010._
**Please note that interview will be via Zoom only**
It is essential for this position that you like and are comfortable around cats and dogs as I have a Bengal kitten and in the future will have an assistance dog.
I am seeking a Personal Assistant (PA) whom I would like to think of more as a paid companion. You will either be currently or willing to register as self-employed. It is important to me that you can be reliable, punctual, and able to use your own initiative. I like to have a consistent staff team, as it can take me a while to build up trust with a new person. The first few weeks likely will involve working up to a positive working relationship. It will be important to have a good understanding of autism and be happy in using alternative methods of communication as I am both Deaf and autistic, so struggle with understanding what people say and mean.
This is a job-share position with a total of 18.5 hours per week between PAs. There will also be cover for sickness or absence leave. The pay is £29 per hour. Ideally, due to being autistic, regular shifts will take place the same day/times every week, with the exceptions for events and for medical appointments. It is essential that you can sign/follow and understand BSL at either a conversational or fluent level.
I am 29 and live with my fiancé in the Wallsend area. As well as being Deaf and autistic, I have a physical disability - a genetic connective tissue condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) which causes chronic pain, fatigue, dislocation in my joints, as well as heart and digestion issues. I use a manual wheelchair with a power assist, and as I am Deaf, I use a mixture of nonverbal cues, signing and phone apps to communicate.
This means I need assistance with communication, personal care tasks, mobility, domestic housework and nutrition; as well as more fun aspects like access to social and leisure activities. I enjoy spending time with friends, going to dance class, as well as visiting museums, zoos, aquariums and art galleries. I would prefer someone who can use their initiative and will be good company - a companion. My social activities take place in Newcastle and Tynemouth.
There will be an orientation on all aspects of how to provide my support.
**Main Responsibilities**
- Domestic Assistance:_
- Prepare simple meals according to dietary needs and preferences.
- Batch cook food that can be heated up when not on shift.
- Throw away any out-of-date food.
- Assist with household chores such as laundry, bins, cleaning, and grocery shopping.
- Provide occasional night support during periods when needing to travel.
- Personal Care and Assistance:_
- Provide assistance with personal hygiene, showering, and getting changed.
- Support after swimming in personal care and getting dressed.
- Ensure safety and comfort at all times during personal care routines.
- Social and Leisure Activities:_
- Accompany to social and leisure activities, including to swimming sessions, Deaf club events, social gatherings, and other community activities.
- Transportation assistance and support in public settings.
- Providing mobility assistance with pushing wheelchair and other aspects when required.
- Communication Support:_
- Facilitate communication using British Sign Language (BSL) and other methods.
- Medical Support:_
- Schedule and accompany me with medical appointments
- Assistance with logístical support to medical appointments
- Ensuring BSL interpretation has been arranged and confirmed for all appointments.
- Manage medications as per instructions and ensure adherence to medical routines.
- Transportation and Travel Support:_
- Assist in planning and attending events and outings
- Coordinate transportation and logístical arrangements for events and outings.
- Using public transport or driving own vehicle to travel to appointments and activities.
**Requirements**:
- Comfortable and confident in the LGBTQ+ community.
- Proficient in British Sign Language (BSL).
- Ideally able to drive and provide transportation.
- Patient, understanding, and adaptable to individual needs.
- Capable of managing OCD-related concerns around time, organisation, and planning.
**Person Specification**:
To be successful in this role, you should:
- Have a positive attitude towards disability and diversity.
- Possess excellent communication skills, particularly around BSL.
- Demonstrate empathy, patience, and reliability.
- Be proactive and able to use initiative in varied situations.
- Be willing to work collaboratively in a job-share arrangement.
