Barnardo’s are committed to providing ‘Better Outcomes for More Children’. Our 2,000 Children's Services volunteers help the charity to deliver essential services in local communities, providing support to over 300,000 children, young people and their families. This role provides a great opportunity to join our fantastic children’s services volunteers, who make a real difference to children, young people and their families. Barnardo's Making Connections team has two functions; to manage Barnardo's extensive historical collections including over 400,000 children's records and to provide access to records for all children who were in Barnardo's care or adopted through Barnardo's. The archive team of Barnardo's Making Connections is currently seeking well-organised, diligent volunteers to work with the archive, research and office support team, supporting with access to service user records and family history, research and digitisation of Barnardo's history and other administrative tasks.
Barnardo's protects, supports and nurtures the UK's most vulnerable children. Barnardo's helps bring out the best in children - no matter who they are or what they have been through. Our volunteers help make this happen.- Tasks: Researching within Barnardo's publications and library
- Developing case studies and linking findings to history, policy and legislation of that period
- Updating research leaflets using Barnardo's publications
- Supporting the staff team with the research of service user files and tracing of relatives
- Supporting the staff team with the return of service user files
- Digitisation of relevant materials
- Data entry, referencing and organising information found during research
- Adhering to Barnardo's policies and procedures at all times, including Barnardo's: Safeguarding; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; Health & Safety; Data Protection; Confidentiality; Recording policies and procedures
- Participating fully in training and supervision
- Volunteering within Barnardo's Basis and Values- Skills: Experience of working in or an interest of research in some capacity
- Knowledge and/or understanding of conservation and archival techniques
- Knowledge and/or experience of cataloging rare and early printed books
- Keen interest in history
- Good communication skills, problems solving and attention to detail
- Commitment and reliability
