We are currently looking to recruit a Head of the Experimental Operations Division who will be responsible for the operational delivery of the ISIS experimental programme. This will include technical and engineering support for the neutron and muon instrumentation and provision of an extensive range of sample environment equipment. The role also covers the operation of two neutron target stations, two experimental halls and a range of specialist chemistry, physics and biology laboratories.

We are looking for someone with a proven track record in the operational management of a complex technical service and considerable experience of managing a team, budget and good knowledge of health and safety.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Leadership of experimental operations, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Coordinate the operation of the target stations and delivery of user support.
- Provide strategic planning of the support services as ISIS increases operation.
- Development of staff through training and coaching.
- Manage the financial and resource aspects of the division.
- Be responsible for the safety of ISIS employees and visiting users in relation to the experimental programme and facility.
- Participate in the wider management of ISIS through the ISIS Leadership Team.

The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. The suite of 30 neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy instruments provides unique insights into the properties of materials down to the atomic scale.

The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source employs more than 600 members of staff engaged in the development and operation of the source, instruments and associated technology and engineering.

Essential:

- Significant management expertise of an operational nature. (S&I)

- Customer focused and driven to provide world class services. (S&I)
- Enthusiastic and interested in solving technical problems, able to distil information to get to the heart of the problem. (I)
- Able to communicate with non-experts and experts alike, presenting options and ideas. (I)
- Able to work under pressure. (I)

Desirable:

- Postgraduate degree (MEng or MSc) or Chartered Engineer. (S)
- NEBOSH certificate. (S)

Special Requirements:

- Able to work as a classified worker. (I)
- Willingness to take part in travel outside the UK. (I)
