**Department Overview**

Underwriting Operations is part of Markel International's (MINT's) Corporate Management team, with responsibility for the Performance, Risk, Technical Underwriting, Oversight, Governance, and Reinsurance Placement for all Underwriting Divisions.

The purpose and mission is to:

- Support the long term, profitable growth of MINT's underwriting
- Support and monitor underwriters in implementing their business plans
- Implement and oversee internal & external principles, regulations, processes and appetites
- Support the annual planning process
- Leads all aspects of the annual purchase of treaty reinsurance
- Support changes in the regulatory and competitive landscape
- Act as bridge between Corporate underwriting and Mint Underwriters
- Act as a bridge between the Divisions and support units
- Promote the appropriate use of data and technology

**What you will be doing**

**Primary functions**:

- Provide and or obtain clearance on underwriting referrals
- Provide technical underwriting support on conferrals
- Responsibility for ensuring the Product Governance strategy and framework is clearly articulated and understood and ensuring the framework remains fit for purpose.
- Responsible for providing regular Management Information and updates to key senior regulatory committees
- Assist in the growth and development of performing classes including the Underwriting Initiative Framework
- Point of contact for Product Governance, Conduct queries and regulatory change requirements
- Liaison person for Underwriting Managers, dealing with enquiries, underwriting communications including technical guidance, embedding of appetite and changes to process

**Additional responsibilities include**:

- Support external liaison with regulators, where required, including Lloyd's, PRA, FCA and BaFin
- Support change to products and process due to regulatory developments
- Acquire knowledge of emerging risks and market environment to assist in innovation and underwriting appetite and discipline
- Assist in the development of technical knowledge within product lines
- Provide assistance as required for internal and external auditors
- Collaborate closely with support divisions Actuarial, Finance, Legal & Regulatory, IT, Operations as required
- Take part in strategic project work as required
- Manage delivery of required actions
- Attend meetings as required

**What we are looking for**
- Broad underwriting / insurance background
- Experience in first line conduct and compliance in either an insurance carrier, an MGA or a broker based business
- A thorough knowledge of insurance regulatory regime
- Strong interpersonal and people leadership skills, ability to drive consensus
- Experience of collaborating with senior management and boards/ committees
- Project management methodology capability
- Strong analytical and interpretation skills
- Team orientation - it is important that the person works within the team to ensure high standards of conduct
- A track record in demonstrable ownership and delivery
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good organisational skills
