Specialist in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

Scarborough, United Kingdom York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care Directorate is part of the Surgery Care Group. Surgical services are located at two Acute Hospitals, York and Scarborough and also at Bridlington, a cold, elective site.

At Scarborough Hospital surgical services are provided with the support of a brand new 9 bedded Intensive Care Unit (funded to 6 Level-3 beds or equivalent). The main theatre suite comprises five theatres, in addition to which, there are separate maternity theatres.

Anaesthetic services are also provided in Bridlington Hospital, approximately 20 miles from Scarborough. The two theatres available provide a highly developed elective Orthopaedic surgery service and day-case surgery for a variety of other specialties on this site.

Surgical services currently supported at Scarborough include; General surgery (including Emergencies), Orthopaedics and Trauma, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial, Oral surgery, Ophthalmology and Urology. Enhanced Recovery Programmes are well established, especially in Orthopaedics, where we are now increasing our day-case arthroplasty rates. Preoperative assessment sessions are provided as well as a full nurse-led Pre-assessment service.

At York Hospital there is a 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit (funded to 12 Level 3 beds or equivalent), and 18 operating theatres situated in the main theatre suite and on the Day Unit. In addition there are two Post Anaesthetic Care Units (PACUs).

The post-holder will work as part of the senior anaesthetic team, providing anaesthetic and ICM services across all of the Trust’s sites (travel time/mileage remunerated for excess time over and above home to base travel). As a Specialist it is expected that the post-holder will undertake clinical duties independently, and act at the level of an RCoA sessional supervisor when required. The post-holder will be expected to be able to supervise and support Junior Doctors working in anaesthesia.

Given the on-call duties of this post, sessional work during the week in Critical Care will be provided.

We provide acute and community services for approximately 800,000 people living in and around York and Scarborough, providing a range of specialist services over a wider catchment area across North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Ryedale.

In April 2011 the Trust took over the management of some community based services in Selby, York, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale. This includes some community nursing and specialist services.

The acquisition of Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Health Care NHS Trust was finalised in July 2012. The key aim of the integration is to strengthen clinical services and ensure the delivery of the most comprehensive set of sustainable, quality services as close to the patient’s home as possible, and as such this represents an exciting development for the organisation.

The York Hospital is the Trust’s largest hospital and offers a range of inpatient and outpatient services. With our two community rehabilitation hospitals at St Helen’s and White Cross Court we have over 700 beds.

Scarborough Hospital is the Trust's second largest hospital. It has an Accident and Emergency department and provides acute medical and surgical services, including trauma, intensive care to the population and visitors to the North East Yorkshire Coast.

Individual job plans will be discussed by the post-holder with the Clinical Director and will become operational on commencement. All jobs plans are agreed in line with the Trusts Job Planning Principles. DCC and SPA commitments will be annualised. Weekly commitments will vary depending on departmental need.

Job plans will be reviewed at least annually, following an appraisal meeting. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out the Specialist’s typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a Specialist’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments.

It is expected that additional programmed activities will be offered to the post holder up to a maximum of 12. Any offer of additional programmed activities will be based on the needs of the service and in line with the Trust objectives and will be reviewed on at least an annual basis.

A core 1.25 PAs of SPA time is provided per week for Consultant, Specialist and SAS grades initially with additional PAs available for specific extra roles and responsibilities as required by the Directorate. SPA allocation may be reduced pre rata for those wishing to work less than full time.

The Directorate does not yet have a formal CESR pathway but is actively exploring this avenue.
