We are looking for a highly motivated, forward thinking and enthusiastic Maternity Care Assistant to join our Swansea Community Team. The successful applicant will be based in the community in Swansea and will act as a member of a multidisciplinary team working under the direct supervision and guidance of midwives and other professional staff. The Maternity Care Assistant will assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of care, by providing support to the multidisciplinary team, women and their families

The successful applicant will be expected to be flexible in their approach to work, demonstrate initiative and be a team player.

The position is part time - working 22.5 hours a week.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The maternity care assistant (MCA) will act as a member of a multidisciplinary team working under the direct supervision and guidance of midwives and other professional staff. The MCA will assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of care, by providing support to women, families and the multidisciplinary team.

The MCA will undertake duties they have been trained and assessed as competent to perform as delegated by a midwife.

Swansea Bay University Health Board covers a population of around 390,000 in Neath/Port Talbot and Swansea areas and we have a budget of around £1bn.

Singleton Hospital, overlooking Swansea Bay, hosts a range of maternity services across the site. Theses include;
- antenatal clinics,
- day assessment unit,
- acute assessment unit,
- ante-natal ward,
- our midwifery led bay birth unit,
- labour ward,
- post natal ward,
- obstetric theatre
- close links with our tertiary neonatal unit on site and transitionary care unit on antenatal ward.

Alongside Singleton Hospital we have a Community Midwifery Team who support patients in the community.

Neath/Port Talbot Hospital was opened in 2003 and has roughly 200 beds. Our Maternity services in NPT comprise of:

- Ante-natal clinics
- Day Assessment Unit
- Midwifery Led Unit

We also have a Community Midwifery Team in Neath/Port Talbot who will support patients in the community.

Care of the woman/baby and family
1. To be clear of the responsibilities and limitations of the role of the MCA who will be accountable to the midwife in charge.
2. The MCA will undertake delegated tasks for which the relevant training education and competency assessment has been formalised. The delegated task will be undertaken without direct supervision
3. The MCA will communicate directly back to the midwife the outcome of care and information provided and will document in the relevant records related to the care.
4. To be involved in group/individual allocation of duties and the carrying out of those duties/tasks required to meet the care prescribed by the Midwife.
5. To be aware of a woman and baby’s individual needs whether they are emotional, social, physical or spiritual and report to the midwife in charge any change deemed relevant to their care.
6. To observe and report any changes noted in a woman or baby’s condition, to the Midwife.
7. To assist the midwife in the provision of direct procedures, e.g. recording maternal observations temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure, venepuncture, urinalysis and admission weight.
8. Assist with infant feeding and support new mothers learning parenting skills etc
9. To deliver all relevant information the MCA has been trained and assessed to deliver; in particular relating to the woman’s discharge from the post natal ward.
10. To provide CO monitoring and recording as part of the admission process to the ward area for all women.
11. To identify women who smoke on admission to the ward area and offer referral to in-house services “Time to Quit” for cessation support in line with “Smoke-Free hospitals”
12. To discuss the benefits of smoking cessation support with women admitted to the ward and identified as smokers.
13. To refer to cessation services when consent gained from women admitted to the ward.
14. Competently and accurately record details of discussions with women and their families within the midwives overall care plan.
15. Must achieve Agored Cymru (or equivalent) competencies for MCA Role within 2 years of taking up post

16. To understand his/her role with regard to other team members and how the team functions as a whole.
17. To be aware that the information regarding the woman and her family is confidential and is only to be discussed in the course of his/her duties with an appropriate member of the MTD team.
