**Job summary**:
If you are a qualified lawyer looking to accumulate new skills and valuable technical legal experience whilst making a positive impact on the UK economy and society, then an exciting opportunity exists within the Completion and Markets Authority's (CMA) expanding legal team.

The CMA is the UK’s world-leading independent regulator and non-ministerial department, established to promote fair competition, support economic growth and protect the best interests of consumers and businesses. To continue this work and to contribute to yours and the CMA's future, this role offers an excellent opportunity to undertake a two-year structured learning and training programme funded by the CMA.

**Job description**:
As a **Legal Adviser**, you will gain vital experience whilst working across a range of competition and consumer law matters including:

- Competition law enforcement
- Consumer law enforcement
- Merger control
- Market studies and investigations
- Regulatory appeals
- Office for the Internal Market/Subsidy Advice Unit

You will also have the chance at the end of the programme to become a permanent member of the CMA's competition/consumer specialist legal team.

As a Legal Adviser, you will contribute to the valuable work produced by the CMA, where you will provide high-quality analysis, decisions, reports and will contribute to policy development. You will offer clear and timely legal advice to case teams and decision makers, ensuring that the decisions taken by the CMA are legally robust and in line with the CMA's established practices and guidance.

Outside of your legal advisory work, there may also be opportunities to gain litigation experience.

You will be a fully qualified lawyer who is entitled to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEx Fellow) in the UK. Whilst no previous technical experience or knowledge of competition or consumer law is required, you must demonstrate a strong interest in developing a career in these areas. You will possess a strong background of providing legal advice as well as significant experience of delivering high-quality analysis to set deadlines.

The CMA prides itself on being a great place to work and strives to ensure that staff have the opportunity to grow and expand their skills portfolio. As well as being a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work, you will have an opportunity to work for the public good whilst stretching and developing yourself in doing so.

**Person specification**:
Your detailed responsibilities will include:

- Prepare or review documents for case delivery to achieve robust outcomes that are consistent with published CMA guidance, established practice of the CMA, and best practice worldwide; and ensuring consistency, when appropriate, of analysis and process (both in respect of cases involving the exercise of same functions and different functions).
- Participate, as required, in any litigation challenges to the CMA’s work.
- Monitor and assimilate developments in relevant legislation and case law and litigation practice and inform CMA staff of developments.
- Liaise with Counsel and other stakeholders as necessary and generally support CMA colleagues in developing a flexible and highly effective legal team.
- Contribute to policy development (including best practices and analysis) relating to competition and consumer law enforcement, mergers, markets studies and investigations and sector regulation/regulatory appeals.
- Build and develop relationships within the CMA across different tools (competition, consumer, mergers, market studies and investigations and sector regulation/regulatory appeals) and with other professions (economists, remedies, financial and business advisers, data scientists, delivery and policy professionals). This will help develop and support the matrix working environment at the CMA.
- Work effectively within teams to fulfil individual and collective objectives.
