A surgical first assistant plays a crucial role in the operating room, providing support to surgeons during surgical procedures. Here's a breakdown of their job description:
**Role and Responsibilities**:
**Preoperative Preparation**:Assist in preparing the operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments and equipment are available and sterilized.
Verify the patient's identity, surgical site, and relevant medical records.
Position and drape the patient appropriately for the procedure.
**Intraoperative Support**:Work alongside the surgeon to provide assistance during the surgical procedure.
Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon as needed.
Suction blood and other fluids from the surgical site to maintain visibility.
Hold and manipulate tissues as directed by the surgeon.
Use retractors to expose and access the operative area.
**Suturing and Wound Closure**:Assist in wound closure by suturing or stapling as directed by the surgeon.
**Communication and Collaboration**:Maintain effective communication with the surgical team, including surgeons, nurses, and anaesthesiologists.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and proactively provide support.
**Instrumentation and Equipment**:Have a thorough knowledge of surgical instruments, their uses, and proper handling.
Ensure all instruments are properly sterilized and in working order.
**Patient Advocacy**:Advocate for patient safety and well-being throughout the surgical process.
Monitor and report any changes in the patient's condition to the surgical team.

**Qualifications**:
- Completion of a formal surgical first assistant program or equivalent training.
