AWE is currently recruiting for a Convoy Safety Officer to join our growing team. This is a key leadership role in a multi-agency specialist team ensuring safe road transport of Defence Nuclear Materials and effective response to engineering failures and emergency events. This role would suit an Operational leader with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. With demonstrable abilities in high quality detailed planning, you’ll also be effective in dynamic problem solving and command and control under pressure.
Location - Basingstoke/Reading with travel required
Package - £42,000 - £66,400 dependant on skills and experience plus allowances

Key Accountabilities:
- Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality and be a great team player
- Operational management of a multi-agency team when deployed on operations or when training
- Accountable to the MoD for assuring the overall nuclear and radiological safety of Defence Nuclear Material Convoys during road transport and emergency incidents, in accordance with current legislation
Key Responsibilities:
- AWE lead for multi-agency DNM transport operations, fostering strong relationships with Military and Civilian Services
- Acting on behalf of AWE and the MoD as technical Subject Matter Expert for convoy operations
- Attend briefings, meetings, and exercises both internally and externally (including internationally) and carry out operational tasks in accordance with National, International, Customer or internal legislation/requirements
- Convoy Safety Officer is required to have a thorough understanding of programme requirements and risks regarding operations to support decision making on behalf of internal/external customers
To be successful in this role you’ll have:
- An understanding of explosive weapon engineering and radiological health physics
- Health & Safety legislation knowledge
- Understanding of the technical and professional requirements associated with DNM Operations and transport legislation
- Excellent communication and organisation skills
- Effective decision making and problem-solving skills
- An understanding of the technical and professional requirements associated with DNM Operations
