Northfield, United Kingdom The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Description of the Department/Speciality/Service In addition to this post, the surgical department consists of eleven consultant spinal surgeons some of whom work between the Childrens Hospital and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. There are six surgeons with predominantly paediatric spinal deformity interests. The remaining spinal surgeons undertake the majority of adult procedures and undertaking the non-emergency oncology procedures. The majority of consultants will support the deformity service, acting as second surgeons on two consultant cases.

Consultants working within on paediatric spinal deformity are required to operate at Birmingham Childrens Hospital (BCH) and hold honorary contracts with BCH for this. The exact working relationship between the trusts is currently being defined. A service level agreement (SLA) between the trusts is in place to support this. The ROH has given notice to NHSE Specialist Commissioning Group that it will not be providing paediatric (under 16) surgery on the ROH site (currently planned from 2019).

It is anticipated that the majority of this work will be undertaken by BCH and consultants will therefore be required to be on the BCH more regularly with less operating on the ROH site. The Trust has committed to supporting the surgeons in the spinal deformity service and work with BCH to ensure job plans retain the same balance of theatre and outpatient work. Please see attached job description and person specification for full list of duties and responsibilities.
