**Responsibilities**
**As the Lead User Experience Designer, you will be responsible for the following;**:

- Leading collaborative design processes for multiple workstreams through workshops, reviews, critiques and handovers with a cross-functional team.
- Developing and championing the UX process across the business by providing insight and best practice to colleagues.
- Collaborating with digital-savvy colleagues to shape and communicate the user experience vision across digital channels.
- Co-ordinating designers with different specialisms (interaction, UX, product, UI, service) and ensuring the quality of their work.
- Working with Programme Managers, Policy Managers, Product Owners, Delivery Managers, Lead Editors, Lead Developers and external delivery partner staff to define and evolve agile ways of working.
- Communicating with designers and researchers on other programmes to avoid duplication, maximise learning and ensure the coherence and consistency of MaPS digital experiences.
- Working with colleagues to identify, understand and mitigate ways design decisions processes and decisions may negatively impact users, especially those who are vulnerable or experience some form of exclusion.
- Working with Business Analysts and others to understand business requirements and ensure they are addressed in your designs.
- Collaborating with relevant internal teams to ensure our services meet MaPS, DWP and GDS standards for suitability, efficacy, usability, accessibility, quality, security and data protection.
- Developing prototypes of concepts and designs for testing and review.
- Planning and facilitating user research sessions and socialising results to the project team and wider business to ensure products and services meet user needs and expectations.
- Creating and socialising experience maps, process flows and other design artefacts to understand and communicate the wider customer journey through our service and other advice agencies and partners.
- Working with colleagues in our Personas working group to define customer profiles, pen portraits and scenarios.
- Using analytics, user research, customer feedback and other internal and external research to inform outputs.
- Conducting user experience audits, heuristic evaluations, competitive reviews and other desk research.
- Creating UX documentation and assets including sketches, wireframes, low and high fidelity prototypes, sitemaps & specification documents as necessary.
- Acting as the quality assurance lead for the user experience of the final delivered product or service.

**Criteria**
- Solid UX design and research experience (5 years or more). Some of this may have been in an adjacent role, such as graphic or UI design, frontend development, product management or customer
- or academic research.
- Experience leading a team comprising multiple design disciplines (service, UX, product, interaction, and research).
- Comfortable working across multiple projects with several stakeholders in a complex, matrix organisation.
- Comfortable leading and supervising external agencies and temporary staff. Experience working in blended teams of internal colleagues and external agency staff a plus.
- Confident working with other senior practitioners or team leads in other disciplines and departments to drive consensus within and between project teams.
- Able to balance practitioner work with higher level tactical or strategic activities.
- Able to adapt to iterative requirements while championing good UX practices.
- Comfortable working ‘in the open’ to involve the full team in the design process.
- Confident presenting solutions to senior stakeholders across the wider business and addressing feedback.
- Good understanding of and interest in inclusive design.
- Knowledge of behavioural economics and behavioural psychology and how they can inform design.
- Experience with Axure, Figma, Miro, and Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent tools.
- Experience with mobile-first, responsive website design.
- Experience designing to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility guidelines.
- A basic understanding of accessible, cross-browser front-end development to inform high quality, implementable solutions.
- Experience of working with content rich and/or data-intensive websites, ideally for a consumer audience.
- Experience in the public sector or other regulated field (e.g. financial services, medicine, law).

We don’t require a portfolio, but if you have one we’d love to see it.
You will be leading the design of a product aiming to make complicated financial information actionable for a lay audience, so we are especially interested in examples where you have presented difficult information in a way that makes it engaging and understandableto non-experts.
