**Job Purpose**

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. With strategic guidance from the Philanthropy Manager (Trusts & Legacies), develop plans to maximise philanthropic income to the University from charitable trusts, foundations, and other grant giving organisations.
3. Devise and operate an annual programme of approaches to trusts and grant giving bodies ensuring it is comprehensive and agreed with colleagues.
4. Provide advice and guidance about these systems to internal and external stakeholders, using judgement to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate.
5. Research and interpret guidance and intelligence gained from relationships with Trustees and others to identify opportunities for funding and decide on the best presentation of projects.
7. Write concise and compelling proposals to grant giving organisations to secure significant level gifts, ranging from tens of thousands of pounds to several million pounds.
8. Develop relationships with, a portfolio of funding organisations, including prospective and existing supporters - utilising engagement and stewardship opportunities to support cultivation.
9. Organise cultivation and stewardship visits to the University, ensuring all activities run efficiently including the preparation of briefing material for the donor, University staff and leadership, co-ordinating diaries and booking venues.
10. Monitor and report on submissions to Trusts, Foundations and other grant giving bodies and their success rate. Provide reports as required to maximise service quality and efficiency.
11. Make recommendations to the Database & Research teams for the ongoing development and improvement of tracking systems to monitor fundraising activity and ensure reporting requirements are met.
12. Independently research and work with the Research team to identify new sources of funding for specific projects and respond to opportunities when they arise. Oversee the circulation of information and findings to ensure awareness of key information to colleagues as required.
13. Participate fully as a member of the Development & Alumni and External Relations teams, ensuring strong links and good working relationships.
14. Be prepared to undertake projects appropriate to the grade of the role but that might fall outside its direct remit of as the line manager, Director and/or Vice Principal External Relations may advise.

**Knowledge/ Qualifications**

**Essential**:

A1 Either: Broad vocational experience, acquired through a combination of job related vocational training and considerable on-the-job experience, demonstrating development through involvement in a series of progressively more demanding relevant work/roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role
A2 Understanding of the principles of trust and major gift fundraising including regulatory (e.g Data Protection) and legal requirements.
A3 Understanding of and belief in the importance of universities and why they merit philanthropic support.

**Desirable**:

B1 Knowledge of the tax and regulatory environment for fundraising and charitable giving

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1 Excellent writing skills from persuasive storytelling to making cases and arguments and the concise conveying of complex information.
C2 Strong administrative skills with ability to interpret and synthesise information and design and operate efficient processes and procedures
C3 Excellent accuracy and attention to detail with good editing skills.
C4 Proven ability to work pro-actively, manage a varied workload using initiative to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, anticipate and solve problems
C5 Strong commitment to customer service
C6 Flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills and adapt within the role.
C7 Confident, respectful and professional manner with ability to work proactively and collaboratively across teams and with senior colleagues.

**Experience**

**Essential**:

D1 Track record of making persuasive arguments in writing and achieving results.
D2 Experience of working independently and to a tight schedule.
D3 Experience of complex administration within a fast-moving working environment.
D4 Previous use of Raisers Edge or similar database for the tracking and management of relationships and providing reports.

**Desirable**:

E1 Experience of securing philanthropic gifts

**Terms and Conditions**
Salary will be on the Grade 6, £32,332 - £36,024 per annum.
This post is to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
