1. General paediatric ward service The post-holder will contribute to the consultant of the week system to provide four service weeks per year on the general paediatric ward. The general service weeks are shared between most of the paediatric consultants, with most consultants contributing 3-4 weeks per year. During service weeks the post-holder will be responsible for paediatric medical admissions, the paediatric assessment unit, involvement in shared-care surgical and CAMHS patients, and supporting paediatric care in the Emergency Department when needed.

Outpatient clinics The Trust runs a rolling week A,B,C,D system to allocate clinics (rather than 2nd Tuesday of the month etc). The post holder will do an average of 1 - 2 general paediatric clinics a week when not on service (6.5 clinics per 4 week cycle). The post holder will ideally undertake some respiratory clinics but this is not essential. If the applicant has, or would like to develop, additional areas of expertise that complement the team, this would also be encouraged.

There would be opportunity to develop special interest clinics, joint clinics with tertiary colleagues from Bristol, and / or transition clinics with colleagues from adult medicine. These would be included in clinic count above, replacing general paediatric clinics. 4. On-Call The general on-call rota will be shared between a total of 9.6 WTE paediatricians with on-call commitment being proportionate to number of PAs in the job plan.

Therefore this post will have a non-resident on call commitment of approximately 2 weekday nights per month (Monday to Friday) and 5 weekends per year. Weekend days are 24hr on call shifts, with resident evenings incorporated into job plans to allow for a second daily ward round to take place over weekends. Bank holiday on-calls are shared between all the consultants. The post holder will be expected to contribute to cover for colleagues when absent or on leave.

Time off in lieu or locum pay is offered for additional shifts outside of job plan. 5. Paediatric Assessment Unit. The Paediatric Assessment unit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is located on the Paediatric ward and is the overall responsibility of the General Paediatric Consultant on ward service/on call. A second rota providing dedicated consultant cover to the paediatric assessment unit runs from 1pm 9 pm Monday to Friday. Consultants support the junior team in triaging all new referrals and reviewing admissions. This post will incorporate afternoon and evening shifts.

It is anticipated that this will average two afternoons and two evenings per month (19 evenings per annum) which can be linked with general on call shifts. Consultant presence will be in addition to SHO and registrar out of hours cover, and a PAU specialty doctor present until 9pm most evenings. This will support our aim to achieve Facing the Future standards, facilitate higher-level decision making at the start of a childs journey, and increase support to trainees. Consultants on both paediatric and neonatal on call rotas will contribute to these sessions, which are appropriately job planned.

6. Safeguarding There is a separate rota for child protection and for child death rapid response run by the community paediatricians who are employed by HCRG. This operates during normal working hours 7 days a week, and all out-patient routine child protection medicals are done by the community paediatric team during these hours. The RUH consultant paediatricians have primary responsibility for child protection issues for inpatients and emergency department referrals at the RUH, and may receive emergency safeguarding calls overnight.

They can call on the expertise of the community paediatricians as required. In the event of an overnight child death, the rapid response process is undertaken by the multiagency team (including community paediatrician) during daytime hours the following day.
