**Working Days and Hours**:Monday to Friday 37.5 hours a week

**Job Purpose**:
Applicants will be expected to vary hours of duty on occasions to meet requirements of the Children’s Home, ie sickness, holidays, weekends.

Staff within catering will also be required to work to in accordance to the Trust HACCP management systems and working instructions.

The position will entail constant pursuit of quality standards, with flair and commitment to the provision of preparation, delivery, and service of food to young people, staff and visitors.

The Children’s Home provides care for a range of children / young people between the ages of 11-18 years. The Supervisor / Cook will work closely with other staff members in providing a caring environment and will be responsible for the preparation and cookingof meals and responsible for cleaning duties for the home.

**Duties**:

- The preparation and cooking of meals for young people and staff.
- To oversee and supervise the work of the Assistant Cook and ensure their practice is of an acceptable standard.
- To carry out general household tasks to provide a clean and tidy environment.
- Maintaining a warm, welcoming, and homely kitchen and communicating positively with the young people who reside in the home.
- Ensuring all purchases are within the homes agreed budget.
- Daily requisitioning of provisions.
- Daily checking of stock, cooked foods, etc and temperature of refrigerators and deep freeze. Ensure, 'Use By’ or 'Best Before’ dates are adhered to.
- Ensure the worktops, utensils and items of equipment are cleaned regularly.
- Reporting any defects in same.
- Reporting of accidents.
- Adhere to Health and Safety at Work Regulation Order 1978, HACCP Procedures and Instruction and COSHH. You should note that under the Health and Safety at Work Legislation, you are required to take all reasonable steps while at work to ensure your own healthand safety and the health and safety of those who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work. You should also be aware that we operate a No-Smoking and No-Alcohol Policy within the Home.
- Report to Assistant Social Work Manager and Social Work Manager of any infestation of vermin, insects, - ie mice, cockroaches, etc.
- Ensure that standards of personal hygiene are maintained.
- Liaise with Assistant Social Work Manager and Social Work Manager regarding presentation of Daily Menu for young people and staff.
- Attend as required training courses/sessions.
- Ensure procedures for waste disposal are adhered to and food bins are properly maintained.
- Report to Assistant Social Work Manager and Social Work Manager any medical condition such as skin rash, vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Ensure meals are served at correct temperature.

**Education, Qualifications and Skills**:

- 1 years relevant experience as a cook working within a commercial catering/Health Care facility.
- NVQ level 1 & 2 in Catering Qualification or and Guilds 706/1 plus 706/2 or equivalent.
- 3 years relevant experience as a cook working within a commercial catering/Health Care facility.
- CIEH Level 2 Food Safety.
- Basic Food Hygiene Qualification.
- Budgeting skills.
- Food Hygiene Regulations and HACCP.
- Menu planning.
- Ordering and waste control.
- Understanding of housekeeping duties including cleaning.
- Have an understanding and interest in the needs of Looked After Children.
- NVQ Level 3 in Catering.
- Intermediate Advanced Food Hygiene.
- Experience of Supervising Staff.
- D32/33 Assessor Award - Experience within a training environment.
