An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and motivated Health Economist to join the health economics team within Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). This is an established joint post working equally between the Evidence Directorate and the Medicines and Pharmacy Team.

This is an applied health economics role, contributing to shaping advice and decision making across NHS Scotland, and helping to ensure timely and equitable access for patients to medicines, medical technologies and other interventions. Within the Evidence Directorate, the post holder will contribute to the production of evidence reviews and advice for our three national technology assessment bodies: the Scottish Health Technologies Group (SHTG); the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN); and the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). Within the Medicines and Pharmacy Team, the post holder will lead the health economic assessments and further develop robust methods and processes, which support the delivery of the National Cancer Medicines Advisory Group (NCMAG) Programme. The NCMAG programme was established in 2021 with the aim of improving consistency, effectiveness and efficiency of process for the safe implementation of new off-label and off-patent uses of cancer medicines in Scotland.

Providing economics input to a range of projects, duties include producing rigorous reviews of health economics evidence; developing models to assess the cost effectiveness of interventions; undertaking resource and cost impact analysis; and support for research activity across the organisation. Your role will also involve publishing your work and contributing to scientific conferences in relevant fields when required.

The role requires a clear thinking and methodical approach with strong quantitative and analytical skills. You will have excellent report writing skills and the ability to work autonomously managing and summarising large amounts of scientific information to tight deadlines. Strong influencing and communications skills to inform the decisions of senior clinicians and managers across NHS Scotland are required. Excellent interpersonal skills, supported by good oral, written and presentation skills are also essential.

You will be expected to have a relevant degree, a postgraduate degree in health economics (Masters level or equivalent), a sound understanding of economics concepts and practical, applied health economic evaluation experience.
