The Patient Safety Partner (PSP) role is a new role developed by NHS England to help improve patient safety. We are looking to recruit two patient safety partners to work with our staff to help improve safety within our local health and care system. patient safety partners can be patients, carers, family members or other lay people.

We are looking for people who can consider what we do from a public viewpoint and who will ask us how our plans will meet the needs of our patients. - Supporting safety training that is provided for staff
- Being part of project teams that are working to improve safe care in our systems
- Joining our quality and safety related meetings
- Helping to develop patient safety information resources
- Being involved in the introduction of the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework
- Supporting our work to learn from incidents

The time commitment of each Patient Safety Partner will depend on the areas of work that they are involved with and can be discussed during the conversation about the role, but it is not expected to be more than two days a month.

We can offer flexibility in the hours/days working with us and there are a variety of ways in which you can be involved. There is a full induction programme and there will be support and training throughout your time with us.

Some of our meetings are held virtually, and we need people who can use MSTeams or are willing to learn (training can be provided).

The roles are voluntary and not paid; but out of pocket expenses are covered.

The Patient Safety Partner is a volunteer who will be actively involved in the design of safer healthcare at all levels in the organisation.

A Patient Safety Partner plays a vital role by joining relevant safety groups and committees. Their role is to reflect the voice and needs of people who use hospital and community-based health services and will enhance the committee membership by providing appropriate challenge to ensure learning and change.

Key responsibilities
- Bring the voice and needs of patients, families, carers, and the public, into committees in a way that provides appropriate challenge and the drive to improve safety in healthcare
- Consider and respond to complex issues affecting patient safety across the Trust that directly inform relevant Trust strategy and policy to improve the quality of patient care
- Be prepared to put forward ideas of how Patient Safety Partners can support the improvement of patient safety and work with staff to put these in place
- Serve as a member of groups or committees whose responsibilities include the review and analysis of patient safety data
- Work with organisational-wide groups to develop and monitor the patient safety incident response framework
- Be involved in patient safety improvement projects
- Be involved in patient safety training
- Participate in patient safety incident response oversight groups
- Collaborate in the work to support patients, families, and carers voice in learning from incidents
- Support the Trust to maintain a safe and just culture

Core Commitments of the role
- Commitment of two meetings a week with an expectation of a maximum 20 hours a month. An involvement plan will be agreed with the Patient Safety Partner when the scope of the role is agreed
- To ensure that any relevant committee/group the PSP is a member of considers and prioritises the service user, patient, carer and family perspective, and champions a diversity of views
