The Cellular Pathology Laboratory (main base St Richards Hospital, Chichester) within the newly formed University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust currently deals with approximately 35,000 - 40,000 Histology specimens and some 5000 non-gynae cytology cases from across West Sussex including St Richards Hospital, Chichester, Worthing Hospital and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham. We provide an OSNA service; cases fluctuates, however, it is approximately 150 per year.

The successful applicant with join a team of 13 Consultant Histopathologists.

The main laboratory at St Richards Hospital is currently open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, whilst the Worthing Hospital laboratory is open from 8am to 5pm, also Monday to Friday. There is no direct laboratory cover at Southlands Hospital,

This permanent contract will primarily provide reporting capacity for all aspects of histopathology within the successful applicants' scope of practice.

An individual office with a modern microscope, IT equipment, etc. will be made available and there is shared Secretarial support. Both digital dictation and voice recognition dictation is utilised within the department.

The appointee must be prepared to adapt their pattern of working to fit with the contractual obligations of the Trust and the clinical commitments of the Department.

Commissioning Authorities are setting Clinical Quality Standards as part of their contracts. All clinical staff are expected to aim to work to these standards and to any additional standards requested by the Trust Board.
Continuing professional development (CPD)

The appointee will be expected to participate in CPD, as required for appraisal, revalidation and keep up to date. UH Sussex offer 30 days study leave over each 3-year period, with a study leave budget of £600 each year per consultant.
Clinical effectiveness (clinical governance/audit)

The Trust has a rolling half day set aside each month for Clinical Governance, usually an afternoon. Cellular Pathology uses this time for a monthly integrated meeting gathering all Histopathologists from each site in a single meeting where governance matters are discussed.

An audit programme exists, with audits presented at the Governance meeting each month, alternating a 2% workload audit with a specialty-specific audit. The post holder will be expected to contribute to these activities in a proportionate manner with all other members of the Consultant body within the Department.
Annual appraisal and revalidation

The designated body for appraisal and revalidation purposes is University Hospitals Sussex and the Responsible Officer is Professor Katie Urch, Chief Medical Officer for the trust.

There is a well-established appraisal and revalidation process within the Trust. The post-holder will be assigned an appraiser who usually but not necessarily will be a Consultant colleague within Pathology. Appraisal documentation is hosted within an online portfolio using a software platform provided by the Trust (L2P)

Annual Job Planning is undertaken with a view to the requirements of the Department and is currently undertaken with the Clinical Director for Pathology, Dr Sunil Sharma.
