Both digital dictation and voice recognition dictation is utilised within the department. The appointee must be prepared to adapt their pattern of working to fit with the contractual obligations of the Trust and the clinical commitments of the Department. Commissioning Authorities are setting Clinical Quality Standards as part of their contracts. All clinical staff are expected to aim to work to these standards and to any additional standards requested by the Trust Board.

Continuing professional development (CPD) The appointee will be expected to participate in CPD, as required for appraisal, revalidation and keep up to date. UH Sussex offer 30 days study leave over each 3-year period, with a study leave budget of £600 each year per consultant. Clinical effectiveness (clinical governance/audit) The Trust has a rolling half day set aside each month for Clinical Governance, usually an afternoon. Cellular Pathology uses this time for a monthly integrated meeting gathering all Histopathologists from each site in a single meeting where governance matters are discussed.

An audit programme exists, with audits presented at the Governance meeting each month, alternating a 2% workload audit with a specialty-specific audit. The post holder will be expected to contribute to these activities in a proportionate manner with all other members of the Consultant body within the Department. Annual appraisal and revalidation The designated body for appraisal and revalidation purposes is University Hospitals Sussex and the Responsible Officer is Professor Katie Urch, Chief Medical Officer for the trust. There is a well-established appraisal and revalidation process within the Trust.

The post-holder will be assigned an appraiser who usually but not necessarily will be a Consultant colleague within Pathology. Appraisal documentation is hosted within an online portfolio using a software platform provided by the Trust (L2P) Annual Job Planning is undertaken with a view to the requirements of the Department and is currently undertaken with the Clinical Director for Pathology, Dr Sunil Sharma. Research and Innovation (R&I) The Research and Innovation agenda at UHSussex has become a recent focus with a desire from the trust to embed R+I in every department. Working closely with Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University we wish to develop both in house research projects as well as enable the histopathology department to support the research in other departments.

Teaching There is no formal undergraduate teaching commitment within the Department, although medical students from Brighton medical school and middle grade Doctors from Wessex, KSS and the London Deaneries are placed at UHSussex. The St Richards Laboratory is approved for Specialty Trainees from the Wessex Deanery and currently 2 Specialty Trainees in Histopathology are placed here. No Specialty Trainees are approved for the Worthing laboratory. There are at least 5 Consultants who are GMC registered as Educational Supervisors, providing Supervision to both Histopathology doctors and Foundation doctors.

Should the post-holder wish to become an Educational Supervisor this would be supported. Currently 0.25PA of SPA is granted to anyone undertaking Educational Supervision per trainee up to a maximum of 1 PA. This allocation would be taken by converting DCC to SPA. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior.

While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
