**Job Posting** 27-Feb-2023, 5:48:19 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation. Each of its 4,000 plus people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

**The International Directorate seeks**:

- to analyse developments in, and risks to the United Kingdom from, the global economy and financial system;
- to devise, together with other directorates, appropriate responses to them in support of all the Bank’s policy objectives; and
- to ensure that the Bank's engagement in international forums advances the Bank's international strategy for achieving these policy objectives.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the International Directorate (ID) as a senior research assistant (RA).

Your role as a senior Research Assistant will be to support delivery of a wide range of analysis to the Bank of England’s policy makers, helping them understand key developments in the global economy and financial system.

This position is a perfect opportunity for someone looking to develop their data and/or economic analysis skills. Previous jobholders have combined the role with an apprenticeship program, pursuing an undergraduate economics degree. They have then moved on to junior analyst positions within the Bank. We strongly encourage and support staff development and are very supportive of people who are interested in pursuing similar programs within this role.

**Department Overview**:
The Bank’s International Directorate is responsible for analysing current and expected economic and financial developments, and the risks around those developments, in each of the main regions and countries of the world. That analysis supports all three of the Bank’s policy committees, covering monetary analysis, financial stability and prudential regulation.

ID’s objective is to form a single, powerful and coherent view of the global economic outlook and risk environment and its implications for the UK. That informs the debates among the MPC, FPC and PRC and also supports the views that seniors present in international fora. We also undertake analysis to shed light on the domestic policy debate from natural experiments abroad.

The ID research assistant team comprises of a lead RA, one senior RA, and two junior RAs. The team works across the Directorate through supporting products and processes in the Directorate’s three Divisions.

The position sits within the Global Analysis Division as part of the ID-wide RA team, through which the jobholder would be a key part of the range of work carried out across the directorate. The jobholder will participate in the full range of the Directorate’s activities, including:

- Becoming an expert in ID’s range of global macroeconomic and financial datasets.
- Supporting regular ID products and processes, including maintaining datasets for the international forecast; producing summaries of key data releases; producing charts and analysis for regular briefings to the Bank’s policy committees
- Working closely with the ID RA team to respond swiftly to data requests, both from within ID as well as stakeholders around the Bank.
- Supporting delivery of analytical projects, for example by gathering data and external analysis on the biggest issues facing the global economy, such as cross-country inflation metrics or tracking the movements in regional natural gas price measures.

**Job Requirements**:
**Essential skills**:

- Good Excel skills
- Ability to take away key messages from data
- Be able to produce consistently accurate work, working independently, sometimes to tight deadlines
- Ability to manage workload and prioritise effectively
- Ability to identify problems in processes and suggest possible solutions/improvements
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to work across the team and the directorate

**Desirable Criteria**:

- Experience of working with large datasets
- Experience in using R or other statistical programmes

Experience in using DataStream, FAME or other data management and retrieval software
