**Role Purpose**
- Lead the provision of sector expertise to our work in school and basic education reform and development
- Provide advice based on expert knowledge of school system developments which improve the quality and inclusiveness of learning - and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4. Use their expertise to shape the design of new schools programmes and contracts funded by partners, clients or our core budget - collaborating with colleagues across the organisation.
- Demonstrate thought leadership and sector expertise on behalf of the British Council and UK. Be the lead expert in basic education reform and represent the British Council at external meetings, events and in publications to strengthen our credibility in the field of school education development, positioning the British Council for future work around the priority themes agreed as part of our strategy.
- Lead the technical design of bids to win externally funded contracts for clients and partners including the FCDO, EU, Ministries of Education and Foundations. Contribute to the impact and financial sustainability of the British Council through attracting partnership funding and contract income to grow our global basic education portfolio.
- Be the lead basic education sector expert supporting and guiding our regional and country teams in their work with Ministries of Education, donor agencies and commercial partners.
- Guide work within the British Council’s global Schools team to design, commission and disseminate research and insight, working closely with our Research and Insight Team.
- Own relationships with specialist sector organisations or individual experts on behalf of the organisation, including consultants and associates who contribute to our basic education work.

**Main accountabilities but not limited to the following**:

- Support the positioning, pursuit and design of new Schools opportunities across all funding streams drawing on sector expertise and understanding of research base of what works in school system reform.
- Lead, write or quality assure new proposals. Provide technical support to proposal teams.
- Manage relationships with key experts in the UK and international schools sector
- Contribute to the visibility, reputation and brand of the British Council and the UK with clients, partners and governments which will in turn allow British Council/UK to act as a preferred partner and advisor in school education globally
- Contribute expert sector knowledge to our engagement with potential clients and partners for Schools work, to grow impact and income
- Represent the British Council at education conferences, advise ministries and work collaboratively with a range of private and public sector partners. Be recognised as an expert by internal and external clients/partners.
- Contribute to diversifying income streams to deliver strategic priorities for the Schools portfolio
- Build networks and relationships with strategic clients/partners within their area of influence. Use insights to understand current and prospective business development opportunities for the British Council and inform planning/resourcing/investment decisions.
- Build the pipeline for basic education, developing opportunities with identified clients and partners to deliver programmes that are financially viable and achieve our strategic KPIs.
- Lead or support the design of results-based programmes including development of M & E plans and results frameworks.
- Lead selected projects or components of projects to meet agreed financial and non-financial targets and meet global/corporate standards for global and UK-led Schools programmes across all fun
