About the job

**Summary**:
The Home Office leads on a wide range of policy covering crime, policing, counter terrorism, immigration and border security - all issues that are at the heart of the Government’s agenda. The challenges and opportunities the Department faces are significant and can change rapidly in the global environment in which we operate. This makes the Home Office a very exciting and stimulating place to work.

Home Office Analysis and Insight (HOAI) consists of more than 300 people including economists, statisticians, operational and social researchers, intelligence analysts and others. We are part of STARS, Science, Technology, Analysis Research and Strategy, delivering high quality analysis and insight across the Home Office.

We provide objective and high-quality analysis and operational decision support to senior leaders, enabling the Department to understand and tackle complex problems, increase operational effectiveness and develop organisational strategy.

Economics has a clear role within the Home Office to support decision-making, and in developing policy and operations.

**Job description**:
About the role

Economists within the Department deliver a broad range of analysis, including economic policy appraisal, supporting the development of high-profile legislation, providing economic analysis underpinning the Home Office’s multi-million-pound investment decisions, and conducting innovative research and analysis to develop crime, immigration and National Security strategies.

**Responsibilities**:

- Migration and Borders. Migration economists work with statisticians and social/operational researchers in providing analysis and evidence on the economic impact of migration. In the past, economists in the Home Office have been central to several high-profile reports and policies, including the economic impact of EU migration, and an assessment of future migration policies following EU Exit. Economists also inform decision-making at the border, for example by conducting cost-benefit analysis to support major investment decisions and monetising the impact of border security interventions.
- Crime and Policing. Economists here have worked on assessments for legislation aimed at reducing knife and gun crime; on flagship reports estimating the social and economic impact of crime; on econometric evaluations of the effectiveness of crime-reduction policies; on analysis of drugs harms; and on supporting the negotiation of funding for policing.
- National Security. Economists work in cross-disciplinary teams to support a range of policy areas in National Security - this could include working on Counter-Terrorism legislation and strategy; informing investment in countering economic crime including fraud and money-laundering; and evaluating interventions to address radicalisation and extremism.
- Central Economics. Economists in the centre of the Home Office work on cross-cutting strategic projects (for example supporting fiscal events like Spending Reviews and working on strategic planning and performance), assess and support business cases underpinning our major spending decisions, and support the Chief Economist in leading the economist community and setting standards for assurance and appraisal.

Placements may also be in other areas of the Home Office. Work is typically fast-paced and varied. A ‘day in the life’ of a Home Office Economist could involve building models in Excel or R to appraise or evaluate policies; producing analytical briefing materials for Ministers; working with academics to build research programmes; training policy colleagues in economic theory; or supporting the Chief Economist in validating business cases.
