DWP Policy Group (PG) consists of around 1400 people managed through 10 Directorates and based mainly across 3 Policy Hubs in London, Leeds and Sheffield. The PG Head of Office runs the Private Office for the three PG Directors General: Sophie Dean and Katherine Green who are the Jobshare DG for Labour Market Policy and Implementation; and Katie Farrington who is DG for Disability, Health and Pensions.

The Head of Office works closely with the DGs and Directors to lead the Group. The DG Private Office team consists of two Private Secretaries, two Assistant Private Secretaries and two Diary Managers. The team is part of PG’s Corporate Support and Development Division.

**Job description**:
This role is to lead the DG for Labour Market Policy and Implementation Private Office by supporting the Directors General in the delivery of their accountabilities and responsibilities. The office is the key link between Ministers, DWP’s Executive Team and the wider Policy Group.

The Directors General portfolio consists of:

- The development and implementation of labour market policy, including the approach to post-Covid economic recovery.
- Social security coordination and welfare policy including Universal Credit.
- In-work progression and poverty strategy.

The Private Secretary leads the office of the Directors General, Labour Market Policy and Implementation, with support from an Assistant Private Secretary and an Aide, working to the Head of Office. They provide strategic oversight and support to Policy Group, collaborating across the group to deliver quality policy outcomes for our ministers as well as communicate big picture steers across Government.

This is an exciting, stretching and high-profile position, right at the heart of the Department’s decision-making function, the role offers an opportunity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic and exciting environment, managing important relationships amongst senior leaders and stakeholders and gaining a wide insight into the department. There are also opportunities to get involved in work outside the post-holder’s immediate responsibilities.

The role requires longer hours than a typical Grade 7 role. This could be early starts or evening work and will be determined by the needs of the Directors General, this is reflected in the payment of a Private Secretary Allowance (PSA).

**Location**

Please be aware this role is available in London (Caxton House) only as this is where the Directors General are based, and face-to-face support is a key component of the role, it can only be worked in the UK and not overseas so your office base will be:

The department is committed to promoting flexible ways of working, whilst enabling the business to operate at maximum efficiency and will expect colleagues to work from a blend of locations, including some time working at home, as required. This is set out in the Hybrid Working policy. The working pattern for this role is dictated by Directors General need and therefore the postholder will often need to be in Caxton House for more than 40% of their working week.

The corporate hub location will be the designated place of work and any remote or home working arrangement does not constitute a change to your designated place of work or contractual Terms and Conditions.

We are looking for a proactive, organised and dynamic person with excellent communication skills to work effectively with senior leaders and stakeholders. You will need to manage a heavy workload and be able prioritise effectively and enjoy working in a fast-moving environment.
