**Job summary**:
- This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly and supportive team working as a climate science senior scientific adviser, with a focus on climate resilience, to support our understanding of the physical risks of climate change and the potential impacts on domestic energy security and infrastructure.
- The Climate Science Team is a key part of the Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy (SICE) Directorate. We are responsible for managing UK climate capability and greenhouse gas emissions reporting; leading the UK’s relationship with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and providing scientific input to a broad range of domestic and international policies. We are a multi-disciplinary team that delivers through a mixture of core expertise, directly commissioned research and collaboration with other research entities both in the UK and internationally.**Job description**:
- This is a unique opportunity to build our current knowledge and shape our research plans in a priority area for the department, with direct impact on the policies and outcomes we are responsible for. Reporting to the G7 Climate Resilience Lead, you will use your scientific skills and experience to work across boundaries to ensure we build our knowledge of the physical risks caused by climate change, including extreme weather events, and the impact these may have on critical UK services and infrastructure, in particular on our domestic energy supplies. You will have the opportunity to work with world-leading scientists, including those in the Met Office delivering the Hadley Centre Climate Programme, to better understand the current and future hazards posed by climate change. The role involves working closely with policy teams in DESNZ, other government departments, including Defra (who lead on climate adaptation), Cabinet Office (who lead and maintain the UK National Risk Register), and a range of external stakeholders with an interest in climate risk modelling in order to support their decision-making.
- You will have the opportunity to manage our £5m flagship climate services for a Net Zero world (CS-N0W) programme, which delivers evidence to strengthen the climate resilience of UK infrastructure, housing and communities, and represents a fantastic opportunity for you to get to grips with our ground-breaking research activities from day one and make a real impact.
- There are further opportunities for you to get stuck into and play an active role in shaping and delivering the breadth of the team’s climate research activities that underpin our support to policy teams, spanning greenhouse gas removals, land use change, net zero scenario development and bioenergy science.**Person specification**:
- Strong scientific skills with an ability to quickly understand new evidence and their implications, spot emerging topics that have policy relevance at national and international level, and engage with the policy and wider scientific community.
- Track record in developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to deliver agreed goals.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific and technical concepts and messages to a range of audiences including expert/non-expert, and to prepare clear and concise written material.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment, be flexible, proactive and self-motivated. Good project management skills, the ability to deliver to tight timescales and to highlight risks and opportunities early on.
- Flexibility - with an interest in climate risk and resilience, you will be open to working across disciplines and will be eager to build your broader skills and experience in order to help deliver this exciting programme of work.
