**Job summary**:
The role of Technical Operations Lead within BDUK’s growing technical function forms a key part of ensuring that the £5BN of investment into Gigabit Capable telecommunications infrastructure delivers a high performance and high-quality network for the UK.

Our contracts with our suppliers are to deliver Gigabit Networks in really challenging, rural and remote areas, and you’ll be involved in evaluating the technology that underpins these networks, be it GPON, XGS-PON, P2P or Wireless.

You’ll scrutinise the network design schematics, equipment, dimensioning, passive elements, active sites, backhaul & core provision making sure that each premises served can order a Gigabit Connection.

With your knowledge of the methods of network deployment, planning, civils and commissioning you’ll be able to validate the assumptions made within our suppliers' delivery plans and to challenge inconsistencies or omissions within the end-to-end network build process.

You’ll support our Delivery Leads in the verification of service by providing assurance of the network performance and testing characteristics produced via OTDR, iOLM or ILM. Your acceptance of completed telecoms networks (PONs) will form part of the payment process for our suppliers.

**Job description**:

- Support BDUK’s delivery of Project Gigabit (and overall increases in Gigabit Coverage via other programmes)providing technical expertise, scrutiny and sign off on suppliers technical delivery.
- Evaluate supplier submissions for Technical Solution & Deliverability at Open Market Review & Public Review stages and when required at tender submission stages including overall solution design and implementation plans
- Support and guide technical assurance of suppliers' test strategies for gigabit networks at tender stage and at implementation stage;
- Engage with and support in life delivery teams (Local Delivery Leads & Contract Managers) in their interactions with Suppliers to ensure that technical representation is present from BDUK and that post procurement delivery is in line with contract schedule
- Make available technical and deliverability advisory capacity for the rest of BDUK and support strategic discussions on technical developments (including business case and market strategies)
- Support the management and co-ordination of third party technical resource where utilised to supplement in-house resources
- Help to develop and inform BDUK’s infrastructure technical specification models and framework & tools of evaluation
- Develop and manage BDUK's technical relationships with suppliers, Local Bodies, industry and other stakeholders.

**Desirable criteria**
- Significant knowledge in the design, planning, delivery, commissioning and operation of fibre telecommunications networks (domestic or commercial) with demonstrable recent experience as a practitioner in at least one element of the above
- Knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) adjacent comparable non-fibre telecommunications networks such as Fixed Wireless Access and Low Earth Orbit as well as emerging technologies
- Commercially astute with the ability to seek answers to complex questions from a range of stakeholders, both internal and external
- Able to communicate effectively both written and verbal with evidence of delivering high impact and influencing both technical and non-technical audiences;
- Well-developed project management and operational leadership skills
- Self-starter & finisher and able to deliver competing priorities
