Courier / Biomedical Sciences Support Worker

A vacancy exists within the department for a hybrid role of a Courier / Biomedical Sciences Support Worker to be based at our Laboratories at Morriston, Neath Port Talbot and Singleton Hospitals.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and well motivated individuals for the post of a Courier / Biomedical Sciences Support Worker.
The post holder will work as part of a team transporting Pathology samples and consumables throughout the Health Board on a tight schedule. They will also be required to carry out data entry and laboratory-based tasks including the preparation of patient samples prior to analysis and inputting of patient details into the Laboratory computer system.
The Laboratory Medicine Department has its Central Laboratory at Morriston Hospital with satellite laboratories at Singleton, Princess of Wales and Neath Port Talbot Hospitals. These are busy laboratories carrying out blood tests from patients from Hospitals, clinics and GP's in the Swansea, Bridgend and Neath districts. You will be expected to travel between sites in a timely manner.
As a courier you will be required to transport Pathology samples and consumables throughout this Health Board. The department provides laboratory transport vans/cars for work purposes. You will be part of a small team, covering different schedules.
In the laboratory, you will be required to carry out laboratory-based support tasks including the preparation of samples. As a Biomedical Support Worker, you will receipt and register patient samples into the laboratory computer system prior to analysis. Samples include blood, urine and faeces.
The laboratory medicine department provides a 24/7 service which you would be expected to take part in, on a rotational basis.
We are looking for a well-organised person with excellent communication skills. They must be able to work to tight schedules, be part of a team but also use their own initiative where needed. Data entry experience is desirable for this role, keyboard skills are essential.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. A full valid driving licence for the UK is essential.

Transport of samples - driving duties 1. Transport of specimens between laboratories during normal hours and/or out of hours. 2. Maintain contact with base laboratory (Morriston). Inform duty BMS of delays to any run or if no specimens are to be returned out of hours. 3. Maintenance of laboratory vehicle in line with Health Board policy and procedure. 4. Check blood in issue fridges and return to stock any that is no longer required 5. Check that all blood in issue fridge is in date 6. Enter stocks of blood and blood products into laboratory computer system 7. Pack boxes for transport of blood and blood products to other laboratories.
