We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Cellular Operations (CellOps) division as part of the Cellular Modelling team. CellOps is comprised of multiple teams specialising in cell biology-based fields. We function as a core resource at the Wellcome Sanger Institute supporting Faculty in the delivery of cellular-based research with an emphasis on running projects at scale.

**About the Role**

This is primarily a laboratory-based role where you will be responsible for:

- Carrying out aseptic mammalian culture, including generating, expanding, maintaining and banking of various cellular models
- Running required downstream cellular processing, including preparing cell samples for sequencing, genotyping and running phenotypic assays
- Carrying out lab work according to established SOPs to agreed timelines and quality standards.
- Maintaining accurate record keeping and contributing to the analysis, review and reporting of data collected.
- Working collaboratively with others in the team to share ideas, coordinate tasks and encourage open communication.
- Support the day-to-day running of the labs through active participation in department-wide initiatives e.g. 5S, OKRs, cleaning sessions, stock management, etc. Contribute novel ideas and suggestions for improvements, and implement changes to ensure the success of the wider department.
- To conduct minor troubleshooting of procedures under the guidance of more senior staff members.

**About You**

You will have relevant cell biology experience, including cell culture and cell-based assays, with an interest in process improvement. You will thrive in a collaborative environment, where you have excellent team working and communication skills. The processing of clinical samples requires strong time management and organisational skills.

Essential:

- BSc in Biology or equivalent cell biology laboratory experience
- Experience in a life science laboratory
- Good knowledge of cell culture techniques
- High attention to detail and good record-keeping
- Proven ability to be able to organise and schedule your own work
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience collaborating with others and effectively working in teams

Desirable:

- Experience culturing stem cells and/or organoids
- Experience running cell-based assays
- Experience in gene editing technologies
- Experience training others in scientific techniques
- Knowledge and experience of the Human Tissue Act

**About Us**

The Cellular Modelling team focuses on supporting projects that primarily involve large-scale generation of translational cellular models, such as organoids. Some examples of our current work include the generation of new organoid models from tissues of female reproductive organs, tumours, and inflamed bowels, contributing to the study of diseases previously limited by 2D cell models.
