**Overview of role**

You will be responsible for authorising access to the track during Engineering Hours and authorise the safe and timely charge of traction current. The job holder will investigate, report on and monitor incidents relating to all customers of the Track Access Control Centre.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Perform the function of the Line Clear/Line Safe procedures to ensure a safe system of work for all personnel working in the track environment
- Direct personnel on safety matters and ensure maintenance of corporate safety standards
- Control and direct the safe implementation of Engineers Possessions/Specified Areas/Engineers Current Areas/Emergency Possessions. Specify, control and advise of the limits and working areas of Engineering Trains and Possessions
- Continuously assess personnel to ascertain their competence to work, thus ensuring they will not be a danger to themselves, others or adversely effect the operation of the core business
- Ensure all personnel are aware of special conditions applicable to their work site
- Have sole authority for the safe and correct charge of traction current via the PCROs
- Achieve the high standards of the Railway Safety Case requirements
- Instigate immediate action when any unsafe situation becomes known and ensure the effective utilisation of resources to minimise disruptions
- Maintain all safety related documentation and taped records to provide a complete audit trail
- On a frequency to be determined by the Track Access Manager operate as a Track Access Controller employing the paper based system

**Skills, Knowledge, Experience**:

- Complete working knowledge of the Line Clear / Line Safe procedures (D)
- High level of computer literacy (D)
- Detailed knowledge of all the relevant Rules, Regulations and Procedures relating to work carried out in the track environment in engineering hours (D)
- Detailed knowledge of the arrangements for the switching of traction current (D)
- In-depth appreciation of the track configuration, the various engineering disciplines and work practices employed on and about the railway (D)
- Knowledge of the other control functions concerned with the operation of train services (E)
- Detailed understanding of the planning, running and operation of engineers trains, mechanised vehicles, plant and equipment (D)
- Effective telephone manner (E)
- Safety conscious and safety critical in decision making, able to motivate and inspire staff (E)
- Able to act on own initiative (E)
- Able to work under pressure, in a calm, clear and directed manner (E)
- Able to assimilate new techniques disciplines and be responsive to Business needs (E)
- Numerate, able to express oneself verbally and in the written word, decisive, fair, approachable and level headed, with a clear analytical mind (E)
