The successful applicant should possess MRCPCH (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
The post holder will join 2 colleagues with responsibility for children and young people with brain tumours; take a lead role for the long term follow up of all Paediatric Oncology patients, service and educational supervision of junior staff.
This is a new permanent post within the Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Service at the North of England Principal Treatment Centre for Children and Young people with Cancer at the Great North Children’s Hospital Newcastle upon Tyne.
The successful applicant will join 7 Paediatric Oncologists (3 WTE and 4 Academic appointees with varying clinical commitments) and 3 Paediatric Haematologists within the service, providing acute and continuity care for all patients within and may develop further roles within the service, dependent on their interests.

On-call duties
- On call duties will be performed in the Paediatric and Adolescent Haematology / Oncology unit (1 in 8). Separate backup specialist rotas for paediatric neuro-oncology operate for more specialised advice if required.
- Leave cover will be provided for the post holder by paediatric oncology and haematology colleagues. Appropriate separate secretarial support will be provided for clinical activity. Personal office and computer facilities will be provided in the Paediatric Oncology department.
Proposed job plan
- Precise details of responsibilities, sessional commitments and job plan will be based on the needs of the service and interest of the successful applicant and will be mutually agreed after discussion. A proposed job plan can be found in Section F.
- The post will attract 10 programmed activities. This is split as 8.5 for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 for supporting professional activities (SPA). The DCC PAs include 0.5 PA for on call duties. This working pattern will be reviewed once the post holder is in place.
- An annual appraisal and job planning will be mandatory as per current Trust policy. This will take place yearly in December / January.
Teaching, Research and Audit
- The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate teaching, more focused Paediatric Haematology post-graduate teaching and to the higher specialist training of specialist registrars in Paediatric Oncology/Haematology and Paediatrics.
- The appointee’s help and involvement in current research, especially clinical research within Paediatric Oncology/ Haematology will be welcomed.
CPD
- The appointee will take part in the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health CPD programme. The Trust supports such programmes and provides appropriate amounts of study leave and expenses to carry them out.
Management
- The appointee will be expected to take a normal role in management, administration and audit within Paediatric Haematology / Oncology.
