The Oxford Genetics laboratories provide a comprehensive range of cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic and molecular genetic investigations for both rare disease and acquired disorders (solid tumour and haematological malignancy).

Information Technology has become increasingly crucial to the successful operation of a large laboratory. We are looking for a Band 4 Informatics Associate to provide support to the scientific and technical teams delivering a high quality laboratory diagnostic genetics service. The role will include IT / Informatics support and administration including providing advice throughout the laboratory, computer setup and maintenance of asset logs. The post holder will also have responsibility for troubleshooting general and specialist software and hardware issues, and liaising with central IT support and external suppliers as needed.

The Informatics Associate will support the efficient and effective running of the Genetics Laboratories. Tasks will include the data entry of patient and referral information onto the laboratory databases, including undertaking procedures to check and clarify the quality of the information.

The post holder will provide data entry / administration support for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and IT/Informatics services within the Genetic Laboratories and will become familiar with general terminology used for these services.

The post holder will work independently taking personal responsibility for their own work but with support and supervision of more senior staff. They will liaise with administration, IT/ informatics, technical, scientific or clinical staff within the department and when required with other departments or external companies.

They will also be required to contribute to standard operating procedures on Informatics and administration related tasks and will be required to attend and participate in appropriate training, department and team meetings.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Duties and responsibilities will be undertaken from the following:
Provide data entry and administration support for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and IT/Informatics services within the Genetic Laboratories.

Be responsible for accurate and timely patient and referral data entry on the LIMS, other databases or spreadsheets, checking against referral documentation or external sources such as Electronic Patient Records (EPR) or Summary Care Records (SCR).

Allocate patients to family numbers and ensure correct relationships are assigned.

Be proficient at entering and retrieving relevant information from Excel spreadsheets and databases, including the laboratory information management system (LIMS).

Make routine and ad-hoc updates to queries, worksheets or report templates on LIMS, using Crystal Reports.

Perform ad-hoc audits / queries on laboratory data under supervision of senior informatics staff.

Keep accurate written and computerised records.

Assist staff with scanning documents onto LIMS.

Complete installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and arrange for repair or replacement of computers and other equipment as required. Including computer set up and relocation of computer equipment (a degree of manual handling will be involved). Complete software installation following standard operating procedures.

Maintain log of department’s computer inventory and specifications.

Be a first point of contact for routine IT issues (software and hardware). Run backups and general maintenance tasks for improved computer performance, configure computers to run software including LIMS and maintain software updates.

Enter and maintain various other data on LIMS and perform general LIMS maintenance tasks, e.g. adding, updating and retiring user, clinician and referral centre records, setting up new tests and investigations, helping staff with login issues, merging records, monitoring diskspace and removing temporary files.

Assist with modification and testing changes and new functions on the LIMS or other databases.

Contact IT/Digital services and other support and maintenance groups, such as engineers or estates for information and assistance as required. Monitor progress on these requests.
