**Job summary**:
You will work at the heart of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and play a leading role in managing a high-quality service to the Board, chaired by the Secretary of State, and its subcommittees.

Following Machinery of Government changes, this is a key point in the creation of the DBT Board, onboarding new Non-Executive Directors and implementing the Secretary of State’s vision for how the department engages them strategically on our priorities. This is an exciting role that will test a wide range of skills and provide the jobholder with a fantastic insight into how the department works. Full training and support on how to fulfil this challenging role will be provided.

You will play a leading role in managing a high-quality service to the Board, its Member’s including Ministers and Non-Executives and its subcommittees (the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee and the Nominations and Governance Committee), through setting the agenda, ensuring high quality papers, advising the Chair both in advance of and during meetings, and communicating the Board’s direction across the Department.

Supporting DBT’s team of 7 Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) is a significant responsibility for this role. 5 of the NEDs are in the induction process so there is an opportunity to shape the support provided to them, ensuring that the department realises maximum benefit to the delivery of our priorities from their independent expertise and scrutiny.

Upholding high standards of governance is a responsibility for this role, operating with integrity and observing the confidential nature of some of the work and ensuring that the principles of good governance are upheld.

The Secretariat’s work is diverse. We oversee the Department’s governance framework and provide strategic and logístical support to the Departmental Board, Executive Committee, and their subcommittees. The team also manages the Department's relationship with Non
- Executive Directors ensuring the Department engages them strategically on priority work and managing a tailored Private Office function for their interactions with the Department.

**Job description**:

- Take pride in directing a high performing team with a culture of exceptional customer service and continuous improvement.
- Build and manage close relationships with senior leaders across DBT and work collaboratively with internal teams to provide high quality service and products to the committees.
- Operate collaboratively as part of the wider Secretariat leadership team, taking a flexible, professional approach to planning, resourcing and prioritisation to ensure a high level of Secretariat service is maintained, with work fairly balanced across the whole team, and with a focus maintained on the wellbeing and development of staff.
- Lead and line manage 3 x HEO and 1 x EO.
- Direct delivery and delivery through others, ensuring that: agendas reflect the Department’s priorities and are focused on the key collectively owned decisions that must be taken.
- Ensure papers are appropriately commissioned and quality assured, ensuring that the committees have the right material upon which to base decisions.
- Ensure actions are accurately recorded, agreed, commissioned and the delivery is tracked, with issues reported in a timely manner.
- Ensure high quality minutes are accurately recorded, produced, agreed and circulated within agreed timescales.
- Provide detailed, timely and high quality advice the Permanent Secretary and other senior leaders to ensure effective oversight of compliance with governance standards and integrity and effective implementation of a programme of continuous improvement in the quality of service.

**Hybrid Working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
