An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Therapy Assistant to join PhysioWorks, a musculoskeletal service based in a community setting consisting of approximately 60 staff. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to come and work alongside Physiotherapists, Podiatrists and our admin team.

You will need to work alone at times and potentially manage your own case load under the supervision of clinical staff. PhysioWorks does have a commitment to evening work until 8pm. You should have excellent time management, organisational and communication skills, and demonstrate a flexible and mature attitude.

To carry a clinical case load following treatment plans set out by registered Physiotherapists and Podiatrists.

Support registered staff in the delivery of exercise groups and educational sessions face to face and remotely.

Support the admin team in administrative tasks.

Support the Podiatry team in the treatment and management of their patients.

As a member of the PhysioWorks team, contribute to the development of, and adhere to, the strategies, policies and objectives of STH and PhysioWorks.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a large tertiary centre. Physioworks is part of the MSK directorate delivering care in community clinics. Our service primarily receives MSK GP referrals.

Clinical practice under direction

Carry a clinical caseload, i.e., plan and prioritise 1:1 therapy/treatment to patients according to agreed plans provided by registered staff (Physiotherapists/Podiatrists).

Assess/re-assess and monitor and progress patients; teaching and guiding patients in 1:1 or group/class sessions, reporting back to a registered staff when necessary.

Deliver sessions in 1:1 or group settings, either face to face, telephone, or using virtual video technology.

Support the MSK team in the delivery of student placements.

Explain the role of therapy to patients, gain consent and motivate patients to achieve their goals.

Select treatment activities to fulfil therapy goals, taking into consideration the patient’s condition and capability.

Recognise when patients have reached their desired goals and are ready for discharge.

Work with patients, carers, relatives who may have distressing or challenging emotional, social or clinical circumstances or behaviours. This might involve resolving conflict with distressed or aggressive patients, patients with poor mental health or patients who do not speak English and require the use of an interpreter.

Recognise when a patient requires referring to the registered Physiotherapist or Podiatrist for review due to changes in physical or mental health, or a behavioural change.

Initiate referrals to relevant agencies e.g., Sheffield Physical Activity Referral, Social Prescribing; working across professional boundaries to facilitate integrated services for patients.

Provide teaching and instruction to patients and carers regarding safe use of equipment and correct manual handling.

Set up equipment and ensure it is safely used by patients, carers, staff and/or students. This will involve bending, kneeling, carrying, and may involve frequent repetitive activities.

Undertake risk assessments to ensure the health and safety of patients, carers and staff during 1:1 and group/class treatment sessions.

Undertake frequent therapeutic handling and moving of patients, with or without aids and equipment, utilising moderate physical effort within clinical and non-clinical settings. This will involve bending, kneeling, carrying, and may involve frequent repetitive activities.

Assist registered staff by responding to medical emergencies or performing other activities involving manual handling should the need arise.

Complete assessments and treatment records using electronic note keeping for accurate documentation of patient treatment records and audit / patient outcome data, in line with Trust and PWS guidelines. This might involve prolonged use of visual display screens.

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Assist registered staff in the measurement of group/class activity and in the evaluation of patient outcomes.

Governance

Ensure clean and safe working environments exist for patients and carers, to comply with Health and Safety at Work standards and the Trust Infection Control Guidelines.

Complete a risk assessment of 1:1 clinical and group/class space, considering all aspects of risk management whilst carrying out clinical and also non-clinical duties.
