Sendiass Support Volunteer

SENDIASS is an acronym for Special Educational Needs, Disabilities Information, Advice and Support
SENDIASS North Yorkshire are a small team of coordinators that reach across the whole of the county. It is a statutory service that must be arm’s length, impartial and confidential to the Local Authority and all other services too. The team offers this IAS in a number of different ways; Media channels, Webinars and training, our Advice Line and Case work.
We work alongside parents’ and carers’ of children 0-25 years with SEND and our focus is to empower them with the relevant laws and how these can be applied or interpreted through national and local policy. We also work with young people and young adults from 16 -25 years with SEND too.
We are an extremely busy team that has increased demand year on year, now managing well over 3,000 referrals a year. We welcome volunteers and know how valuable they are to our service.
- Attending various events within your locality to set up a stall, talk about the SENDIASS role often alongside a coordinator who will support.
- Supporting for annual reviews
- Supporting request for education health and care assessment
- Virtual meetings and occasionally there are face to face meetings.
We would welcome volunteers that could help support through this statutory process. You will be expected to be comfortable around using and accessing technology.
As part of you becoming a volunteer for SENDIASS North Yorkshire, you will be trained within the Service itself to help understand the SENDIAS service needs. You will undertake a number of relevant short courses that are online, plus the IPSEA level one legal training to ensure you are given the correct up to date information to support your role. You will have half termly supervision with a coordinator as well as adhoc support as needed. As we all work within different locations within North Yorkshire, a SENDIASS coordinator within your location will be linked with you so you both have a closer connection.
