Oswestry Musculoskeletal Oncology Senior Fellowship

This fellowship is designed for an experienced orthopaedic clinician, who would like to gain a further period of development in the sub-speciality of MSK Oncology, in preparation for a consultant role. The doctor will contribute to the provision of MSK Oncology orthopaedic surgery within the Trust. The Fellowship can be designed around the training needs of the successful applicant, with opportunity for independent practice dependent on level of experience. The Trust is one of the UKs five Specialist Orthopaedic Centres and is a leading orthopaedic centre of excellence with a reputation for innovation.

The Trust provides both specialist and routine Orthopaedic care to its local catchment area and nationally.
It is a specialist centre for the treatment of spinal injuries and disorders and provides specialist treatment for children with musculoskeletal disorders. It also works with partner organisation to provide specialist treatment for bone tumours and community based rheumatology services. The Trust provides services for a population well in excess of 750,000 people. The normal catchment area includes Shropshire, North Wales, Mid Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent.
The hospital receives secondary and tertiary referrals from an even wider area due to the specialist nature of its work. Bone Tumour Service The Musculoskeletal Tumour Service at RJAH is one of the five Bone Sarcoma units commissioned by NHS England. It provides a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours. It is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS) along with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
This appointment is to join the existing team of 3 consultants. The Montgomery Unit, a purpose built Musculoskeletal Oncology Unit, opened in 2016. It has a clinic suite of 3 consulting rooms, a treatment room, physiotherapy room, reception area, consultants office/conference room, secretarial and nursing offices. Within the same new build is Oswald Ward which has ten single bed en-suite rooms, Baschurch Day Surgical Unit and the High Dependency Unit.
Our Services The RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital is a 169 bedded specialist hospital, dealing primarily with elective Orthopaedics. Shropshire, North and Mid Wales. There are a number of specialised Units within the hospital including; Arthroplasty, Rheumatology, The West Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI), Department of Spinal Disorders, Foot and Ankle, Hand and Microsurgery, Musculoskeletal Tumours and the Paediatric Orthopaedic Department and a Care of the Elderly until August 2021 Page 2 of 5 Unit. The Arthritis Research Centre was opened in 1996 highlighting the research activity for which the hospital is known.
With a continuous increase in activity, over 11,500 procedures are performed in our theatres each year. The placement is for a post graduate orthopaedic surgeon who has a commitment to a career in orthopaedic surgery, with a secondary interest in research. Duties and Responsibilities Support all three consultants in their out-patient clinics. Assist all three consultants in their theatre lists.
Assessment of new patients, with consultant supervision. Clerk admissions where required and be responsible for the day-to-day care of in-patients. Attendance on ward rounds. Discharge requirements for in-patients.
To assist with any other aspects of patient care as appropriate. To assist in clinic preparation duties Rota Duties will be Monday to Friday with time flexibility required within a normal working day. The are no Twilight, Night or Weekend shift requirement with this post. A suggested timetable is as follows am pm Mon Surgical planning, ward MDT, clinic Research & audit Tue Theatre Theatre Wed Clinic Regional MDT Thurs Diagnostic MDT Theatre Fri Clinic CPD The Trust Medical Structure The junior staffing at Oswestry consists of 18 Specialty Registrars in training who will usually be in the more senior years of training (ST5 ST8), working alongside 4/5 Service Grade Registrars.
