Research Associate in a New Way of Printing Robots

Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

‘LEGO’-like millimetre-sized electronic parts that self-assemble, grow as a robot, heal, adapt, and evolve: the realisation of artefacts with such abilities has been a dream for engineers, leaving at the same time a profound question of what life is. At the same time, the remarkable development of 3D printers has enabled rapid prototyping with specific materials. This project aims to develop novel manufacturing methods of a finger sized robot through self-assembly and unconventional 4D printing techniques. This project is a collaboration with MIT, USA.

Particularly, those
- who have experience in developing small-scale robots. Experience in self-assembly is a plus.
- who have experience in mechatronics and robotics development and have basic physics knowledge.
- who have technical skills in various types of fabrication, e.g., soft-lithography.

For the detail about the eligibility, please look at the separate description.

Sheffield Microbotics Lab (SML) at the University of Sheffield is an interdisciplinary group with a focus on miniature robotics technology, developing robots ranging in size from the micrometers to the fingertip size. Working tightly together with Sheffield Biomedical Robotics Lab lead by Dr Dana Damian, the labs have over 10 researchers in a generous space, including a dedicated cleanroom and equipment line-up for robot fabrication, and chemical and biological corners. The members are also affiliated with Sheffield Robotics which is the fourth leading centre for robotics research in the UK.

The University of Sheffield is among the world’s top 100 universities in the QS university ranking (2023) and first in the UK for engineering research investment (HESA report 2019), with £200M funded for the UK’s flagship manufacturing research centre, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). In addition, the University was named one of the most international universities in the world by Times Higher Education.
The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) has an international reputation for its research excellence. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) identified 96% of our department’s research as rated in the highest two categories, meaning it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent.

If you are passionate about developing small-size robots, then we would love to hear from you
