The Molecular Biologist / FCL Laboratory Manager post will work within the Microbiology team at UK-PHRST to deliver the operational diagnostics, research, and capacity strengthening objectives to partners in ODA-eligible countries, in line with the priorities identified by the Lead Microbiologist and implemented by the Public Health Microbiologists

The post-holder will support the UK-PHRST microbiology activities within the triple mandate by deploying laboratory elements, remote or physical support of projects, performing systematic literature reviews, data analysis, and developing training modules and other related duties as required by the project.

The post-holder will also support the Microbiology team and colleagues from other UKHSA / LSHTM departments with the re-structuring of the Flight Case Laboratory (FCL) operational model, ensuring that the FCL can be readily deployed overseas as / when required.

When operational, the post will be responsible for running the FCL laboratory during overseas deployments and to support research and capacity strengthening projects in ODA-eligible countries. Whilst not on deployment the post holder will support other ongoing projects within the team and/ or manage the operational preparedness of the FCL, including its equipment, assay validation, and all quality and safety documentation.

UK-PHRST Molecular Biology / Microbiology
- To work within the Microbiology team at UK-PHRST to deliver the operational diagnostics, research, and capacity strengthening objectives to partners in ODA-eligible countries, in line with the priorities identified by the Lead Microbiologist.
- To support the Microbiology team with the gradual re-structuring of the Flight Case Laboratory (FCL) operational model, by helping to upgrade existing equipment and procedures to ensure the FCL can be deployed readily deployed overseas as / when required.
- To liaise with colleagues from other UKHSA / LSHTM departments for the identification and validation of assays to be performed using the FCL modules during deployments and/or simulation exercises.
- When necessary, act as team lead, during deployments of the UK-PHRST Flight Case Laboratory, responsible for provision of a diagnostic service for outbreak response.
- Perform any other duties required by the Lead Microbiologist.
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders on ongoing microbiology projects and support training activities within the UK-PHRST and partners when required.

Launched in 2016, the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST) is an innovative government-academic partnership funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and co-led by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), with a consortium of academic and implementing partners in the UK and internationally. It is

comprised of a multidisciplinary team of public health professionals and researchers with a novel integrated triple-remit of outbreak response, research and capacity strengthening to prevent and control epidemics of infectious diseases in countries eligible for UK Official Development Assistance (ODA). Both institutes contribute and are responsible for delivery of the UK-PHRST triple mandate across outbreak response, research and capacity strengthening, with LSHTM leading the research programme and UKHSA who lead the outbreak response.

FLIGHT CASE LABORATORY
- Once fully operational, the post holder will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the FCL, taking responsibility for the provision of equipment, reagents and consumables required to undertake outbreak response, research and capacity strengthening functions, in addition to ensuring operational readiness.
- Day-to-day running of the laboratory operation whilst on deployment, including supervision of reserve cadre and overseas laboratory scientists.
- To ensure the delivery of verified and validated assays in a range of molecular, bacteriological and serological methods in support of all diagnostic activities for ACDP HG 2/3/4 pathogens for use during UK-PHRST outbreak responses.
- Contribute to developing and implementing quality management programmes (including calibration, assay validation/verification, stock management, training competencies, information management system, etc).
- To carry out routine quality control procedures to ensure that samples are being prepared, processed, recorded and archived to a high standard.
- To maintain equipment, including routine monitoring, calibration and safety checks and maintain records of these.
