The Astronomy and Astrophysics Group at the University of Warwick seeks to appoint a Research Fellow working on exoplanet detection and characterisation using the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

The NGTS facility is an array of twelve telescopes situated at the ESO Paranal Observatory in Chile (the site of the Very Large Telescope, VLT). The NGTS telescopes are optimised for exoplanet transit observations, matching the photometric precision of TESS. Our focus is on the discovery and characterisation of new long-period transiting exoplanets.

**About You***

***

The successful applicant will be based at Warwick and will be responsible for scheduling observations and operating the NGTS facility, as well as planning and carrying out maintenance of the telescope array and associated software. You will also carry out research on NGTS and TESS data with the goal of discovering new long-period transiting exoplanets.

You will be an excellent communicator capable of working effectively both independently and as part of the wider NGTS team. You will also possess excellent planning and time management skills to ensure your research objectives are achieved effectively.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.

**Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS)**

NGTS is a collaboration of researchers from the UK, Switzerland, Germany and Chile who work as a team to discover and characterise new transiting planets using the twelve NGTS telescopes at the ESO Paranal observatory in Chile. To date we have discovered more than thirty new transiting exoplanets, including the first hot Neptune in the Neptunian desert. Our focus is on discovering transiting exoplanets that are either young or have long orbital periods. NGTS is operated by the Astronomy and Astrophysics research group at the University of Warwick, UK.

**Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Group**

Astronomy and Astrophysics at Warwick has grown rapidly in recent years to a total of more than ninety staff and research students working in a lively and collaborative atmosphere. Exoplanet research is a core activity spanning observation and theory, exoplanet detection, atmospheric characterization, and planet formation. We also have a leading role in the ESA PLATO mission, hosting the PLATO Science Management office, which is led by Prof. Don Pollacco. In addition to NGTS in Chile, we operate robotic telescopes in Australia and La Palma, including our own 1m telescope. We also make use extensive use of space-based telescopes including JWST, HST and XMM-Newton, and we have access to nationally funded facilities that include the VLT and other ESO telescopes.

**Department of Physics**

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Group forms part of the Department of Physics, which is a vibrant academic department with 200 academic, research, technical and professional services staff, over 800 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate research students.

**For**

We are proud of our diverse community of staff, students, and visitors, and are committed to maintaining an excellent record in teaching and research by ensuring that there is equality of opportunity for all, fostered in an environment of mutual respect and dignity.

We hold an Athena SWAN Silver award, a national initiative to promote gender equality for all staff and students. We are also a Juno Champion, which is an award from the Institute of Physics to recognise our efforts to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.

The University supports flexible working and requests for part-time working or job-share will be considered where possible.
