You will be joining a team comprising of Biomedical and Clinical Scientists that deliver an Integrated Toxicology/TDM service that is essential to patient management and treatment.

The post involves managing the service delivery of our Toxicology, TDM and Trace Elements Laboratories) and delivering a progressive strategy of process change development within the sections.The laboratories use the latest immunoassay and mass spectrometry techniques (LC-MS/MS,LC-HRMS, ICP-MS) to analyse biological samples for Drugs of Abuse, Antipsychotic / Anti-Seizure Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and a wide variety of Trace Elements.

The Integrated Toxicology Department is fully accredited against ISO 15189 standards.

In conjunction with the Service Delivery Manager, to maintain service delivery in the Integrated Toxicology/TDM Unit (including trace elements, drugs of abuse, and therapeutic drug monitoring), KCH in order to provide a high quality service to patients.

The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within the Integrated Toxicology/TDM Unit taking a lead where required, for quality, teaching and training of staff.

To liaise with Pathology IT on software and hardware issues affecting service delivery.

The post holder is required to monitor the training and motivation of staff to meet service requirements and turnaround times.

The post holder will have extensive analytical and technical experience, and is capable of administrative troubleshooting to ensure reliable service delivery.

The post holder will contribute in regular reviews of working practices in the laboratory in conjunction with the Senior Management Executive.

Contribute to departmental recruitment and selection.

When necessary, the post holder may be required to deputise for the Service Delivery Manager.

Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.

The partnership provides diagnostics, testing and digital pathology for hospital trusts, GP services and other healthcare providers.

1. Technical

1. To safely handle blood, urine, faeces, excised tissue, hazardous and radioactive material.
2. To ensure that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used and subsequent records maintained.
3. To support first line troubleshooting of complex analytical equipment or methods is carried out, to arrange for engineer service visits and to supervise and if necessary to participate in the resolution of equipment or method failures, including dismantling instruments to carry out initial repairs.
4. To ensure that reagents are prepared, stored and used according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures and subsequent records maintained.
5. To manage highly specialised manual techniques, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations to ensure optimal service delivery.
6. To measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control and assurance procedures.
7. As required, to undertake technical validation of the results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory quality procedures and protocols.
8. In conjunction with section leads, to take corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate loss of performance of the laboratory instruments or methods.
9. To take appropriate action when there is a situation which may or has caused a service delivery failure e.g. to liaise with clinical staff to ensure that priority work is identified and/or make alternative arrangements for an analysis to be done.
10. To train and develop the competence of trainee Healthcare Scientists, Clinical Scientists and Specialist Registrars in the procedures for which the post holder is responsible.
11. To help initiate, establish and maintain a system that ensures maximal availability and flexibility in operation of departmental chromatography, mass spectrometers, immunoassay and associated equipment.
