**Salary**:£73,000 - £93,000

This is a critical leadership position. The Chief Security Officer is the voice of security across ONS and the face of security to all our statistical and data partners.

ONS collects and processes the nation’s data, and over the last few years has seen a massive corporate transformation in data, methods, technology and practice. We are at the leading edge of data science and analysis, not just in the UK, but across the world. The Digital Economy Act has increased access to data across the UK. We run major Government programmes such as the Census and the cross-Government Integrated Data Service which have pushed the envelope of statistical capability to benefit the UK and its citizens. We have valuable assets that need strong security protection. This data, the platforms that we use, and our people are a key part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure. Our strong security and information controls maintain the trust that citizens place in us with their data.

**Job description**

As Chief Security Officer, you will be responsible for all aspects of organisational security, including information assurance and security operations across ONS.

You will lead the way, providing vision and strategy for security, and support security initiatives in culture, enterprise IT, personnel, business continuity and physical security.

Strategic Engagement
- Cementing strong, effective relationships at Permanent Secretary, Director General and Director levels and advising the ONS Executive Team, Board and Audit Committee on all security and information related matters, reporting to the Board and Executive Group on strategy, plans and issues arising.
- Engaging across government, industry and data organisations you will have an excellent understanding of security challenges affecting our work and support pragmatic solutions to keep data and services secure.
- Leveraging support from Government Security Group, Cabinet Office and specialist technical sources such as the National Cyber Security Centre, Central Digital and Data Office and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, you will be well lead the way in ensuring ONS’s security on all fronts.
- Actively informed on trends and issues within the security industry, including current and emerging technologies, providing professional advice for senior stakeholders on their relative importance and financial impact.

Leading the way in ONS
- Championing and sharing best practice for security, information management throughout ONS, working closely with the security community to embed government security measures and culture across all ONS technology, operations and suppliers.
- Effectively leading our Security and Information Management Directorate (SaIM) and its key services: security risk advice and management; knowledge and information management; physical security and business continuity; security compliance and audit; security operations including our Security Operations Centre. It’s a high performing team, showcasing security culture, robust ‘secure by design’ methods and strong resilience to defend against the new security threats of the digital era.

Your people
- Leading, managing and inspiring a high performing security and information team across all ONS sites, champion learning, development and professional education for security and KIM services, cultivating talent and foster an inclusive, diverse and motivated workforce.

Strong Effective Governance
- Continuing to ensure development and implementation of security, information governance through principles, policy, standards, guidance and procedures to embed effective risk-based security culturally across ONS and within ICT infrastructure and business systems proportional to the ONS risk appetite.
- Influencing business and technical development within the organisation that builds security into working practices by design and provides assurance that security and information solutions meet standards, compliance and regulations and ensures security risks are aligned with ONS strategic business objectives.
- Overseeing the ONS business continuity and security incident response capabilities to provide timely response actions to events, ensuring that this capability is regularly revised and tested.
- Ensuring robust management of security risks affecting ONS operations through close working across business areas, technology and estates senior management teams to ensure their security needs are understood and meet corporate risk appetite.
