Job Introduction

HMP Peterborough are recruiting for an Education Manager to provide support to the team.

As an Education Manager your team will provide educational opportunities that will enable the prisoners to gain skills and competencies that will assist them to return into the community without re-offending.

HMP/YOI Peterborough is the country’s only purpose-built prison for both male and female prisoners (kept separate at all times), including a 12-place mother and baby unit. We are committed to offering education and development programmes to provide residents with the skills required to enter employment on release, so reducing the chances of further offending. Providing creative outlets, such as workshop activities, helps to equip those in custody for when they are released. We use ‘Restorative Approaches’ to bring people in conflict into dialogue. Using a skilled and structured process, those who have been harmed have an opportunity to be heard and those that have caused the harm are held to account for what they have done. We have strong links with the community outside through a variety of partnerships, including our outreach activity Outside Links’ offering support and advice to both residents and their families

Main Responsibilities
- Work effectively and efficiently with the Head of Reducing reoffending to develop and create innovative classes
- Ensure effective systems are in place to monitor the number of prisoners in education
- Feeding into departments processes including quality improvement plans
- Contribute towards the recruitment of new staff, carrying out assessments and interviews
- Maintain relevant knowledge of education resources, legislation and best practice, making recommendations as appropriate
- Collate statistical information on various aspects of the service provided
- Lead, mentor, observe and provide supervision for team members, providing support to prisoners, ensuring provision of good quality support at all times
- Contribute to education budget allocations and requests
- Assist in any marketing strategies related to courses, delivery and training within normal work hours and out of normal work hours.
- Attend team meetings giving feedback on provision/sessions and ideas for development of delivery practice for the department generally
- Establish a rapport with prisoners to encourage them to take their first steps in learning and establish coping mechanisms to achieve their potential

Essential

Hold a full teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent) and, ideally, relevant assessor/verifier awards.
Have a proven experience of teaching.
To have an interest in the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders.
To have an ability to communicate effectively at all times through different mediums, including spoken and written communication.
Leadership and Management qualification and/or experience.
Experience in leading, managing, developing and maintaining a high-quality provision

Desirable

Have experience of developing staff and/or teams.
Experience in a prison environment
