The appointment is to commence immediately for a fixed term period that terminates on 1/8/23. MRCP Part 1, Part 2 and PACES is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’, full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST3+.

DUTIES OF THE POST

This LAS post is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield is designed to cover a gap in the Neurology Specialist Training Programme. It is not a training post but the timetable will be based on that of a Neurology Trainee as much as possible. The successful applicant will gain experience in all clinical neurology sub-specialities including stroke medicine.

DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY

The Neurological Department lies within the Directorate of Clinical Neurosciences of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) NHS Trust (based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital).

The Department provides a clinical service to North Trent and South Yorkshire serving a population of 2.2 million. Clinics are held in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Lincoln, Chesterfield, Barnsley, Worksop and Bakewell.

At the Royal Hallamshire Hospital there are 51 Neurological beds. There is also access to appropriate ITU facilities and clinical neurophysiology, neuropathology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology (including magnetic resonance imaging) and neuropsychology.

The University Department of Neurology is also situated in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the newly developed state of the art research facility SiTRAN. The Academic Director, Dame Professor Shaw has an interest in motor neurone disease.

Teaching of Sheffield undergraduate and postgraduate students takes place within the department.

The departments of neurology, neurophysiology, neuropathology, endocrinology, head & neck, and ophthalmology, are all sited at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Radiation oncology services are located at the immediately adjacent Weston Park Hospital. The Royal Hallamshire Hospital has close links with the co-sited University of Sheffield.
