Job description

**Do you want to make a real difference to children and families? North Somerset Council are looking for Family Support Workers who are motivated and resilient team members to support, deliver and develop services for children and families in North Somerset.**

**About the role**

Working closely with Social Workers and other professionals, you will work extensively with vulnerable children, young people and their families.

You will provide focused family support to families with complex needs which improves parenting capacity and reduces behaviours which cause risk to children.You will work with children and their families in their homes, schools and a variety of other settings.

You will form purposeful relationships with families, working in a strengths-based way, using Signs of Safety to support families to keep their children safe, develop their parenting skills and improve school attendance. You will also support families to access appropriate specialist support, such as drug and alcohol services, or mental health services etc as necessary. You will work as part of a team providing specialist interventions and also provide advocacy for the family as required.

**Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.**

We currently have three part time positions available, hours ranging from 22 to 25 per week. Hours are negotiable and can be discussed further at interview.

**About you**

You will need to be resilient, assertive, and committed to keeping children safe. You will be child centred whilst supporting the whole family. You will have a ‘can do’ approach and be able to work flexibly.

Skills required for this role include:

- Minimum of NVQ Level 3 or 4 or equivalent (or working towards this).
- Experience of practical aspects of childcare, domestic routines, health and hygiene.
- Proven experience of working directly with children and families in difficult situations.
- Some experience of acting as a lead professional or key worker for a child or family.
- Experience of working with adults (group work with adults would be desirable).
- Knowledge of child development, safeguarding children and working with children and families.
- Knowledge of good parenting and the risk factors that poor parenting and adults with multiple problems may present to children.
- Knowledge of universal, statutory and voluntary services and their role in promoting the welfare of children, young people and their carers.
