**Job summary**:
The Areas Directorate is a joint unit between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Our mission is to empower places - from rural areas to major cities, from prosperous places to those facing challenges in the modern economy - to bolster their potential through boosting economic growth. We lead within the UK Government on regional policy, working on a range of initiatives including support for regenerating towns and high streets, local growth plans, and economic intelligence. We work at different levels, from the small neighbourhood to the large sub-national strategy.

The Areas Directorate is committed to the welfare of all our people. We take mental health and work-life balance seriously.

**Job description**:
As SEO Deputy Area Lead in the South West Area Team, you will be an expert on economic growth and levelling up across the area, and build strong knowledge of local politics, economics, challenges and opportunities. You will manage relationships with a range of stakeholders including chief executives, economic development officers, HE/FE and other institutions, local government associations, local business organisations, and others. Your role will compliment that of the Area Lead for the area.

You will use your knowledge to support DBT and DLUHC priorities, holding expertise on sectors, investment, relevant industries, devolution, and local government reform. You will develop strong day-to-day productive relationships with policy officials across a range of areas, including housing, sector teams, and transport. You will often lead on advice regarding particular challenges or opportunities for the team’s wider area, and will be responsible, either directly or through one of the team’s HEOs, for preparing high quality briefing material tailored for the audience (usually Ministers and Senior Civil Servants).

**Our team**

The South West team drives economic growth and levelling up in the south west of England, from Swindon and Wiltshire in the north east of the region to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the far south west. With an economy worth £64.4bn, the South West excels in a number of different industries including advanced manufacturing and engineering, aerospace, creative industries, cyber and financial services. The geography of the region also presents unique opportunities for economic growth: we have outstanding natural capital, including almost 700 miles of coastline, and are home to a number of renewable energy resources. This makes for varied and interesting roles in our team. We are friendly and supportive, with a passion for our work and our region, and we are growing to reflect the Area Directorate’s increased responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

You will:

- Manage relationships on funding delivery (including the £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund, the UK Community Renewal Fund, and the UK Community Ownership Fund) working with local partners to help them deliver new projects and programmes.
- Work with the central funding delivery team, other area team colleagues and delivery partners to spot risks, challenge poor performance, and tackle issues as they arise. As part of this, you will lead on corrective actions, drawing on support from others.
- Develop an understanding of government priorities across a wide policy span, and inform cross-Whitehall discussions with local insight.
- Work with central policy teams to provide answers to enquiries from local authorities and other organisations on issues related to funding assessment and delivery.
- Input into policy, corporate or delivery design, attending policy boards and participating in policy / programme design working groups to ensure local delivery considerations are included in policy making and feeding back to your area team.
- Provide advice on key local challenges or opportunities for your team’s wider area, providing quality advice on complex issues to SCS and Ministerial advice as appropriate, and working with your team and others, using your relationships to lever solutions where issues arise.

**Person specification**:
