We are looking to recruit a high calibre individual to be part of our clinical coding team. An opportunity exists for someone interested in a career in health informatics to join the profession of clinical coding.
We require a motivated and enthusiastic individual to be part of our extremely busy clinical coding team.
Clinical coding is a high profile area of work as the data collected by the Team is essential for the effective management of the Trust and directly influences its income through Payment by Results.
Clinical Coding is the translation of medical terminology that describes a patient’s complaint, problem, diagnosis, treatment or other reason for seeking medical attention into codes that can then be easily tabulated, aggregated and sorted for statistical analysis in an efficient and meaningful manner.

- To undertake the Clinical Coding Standards Course that is fundamental to this role.
- To maintain and develop practical coding skills and theoretical knowledge relating to the use of the encoding schemes. This will require a range of formal internal and external specialist training.
- To maintain and develop other professional knowledge related to the profession of clinical coding. This will require personal development in the form of research, formal and informal training and information acquired through experiential learning.
- To ensure compliance with national and local policies for the use of the encoding schemes being used.
- To ensure that national and local policies that govern the use of the encoding schemes are followed and implemented throughout the department and to report instances where policies have not been followed.
- To review and correct where appropriate, incorrect and/or inconsistent data items.
- To suggest improvements to local policy where appropriate.
- To maintain a professional development portfolio.
- To organise own study schedule to follow on from the Clinical Coding Standards Course to work towards taking the National Clinical Coding Qualification
- To take responsibility for own work.
- To organise own work in order to ensure that individual deadlines and objectives are met.
- To analyse and abstract appropriate information from a range of information sources e.g. case notes, clinical systems, histopathology reports.
- To accurately translate clinical information into a statistical code using the encoding schemes ICD-10 and OPCS 4.
- To enter encoded data on to a computer system correctly. This will require the ability to be able to review a completed screen of data and identify errors such as incorrectly typed prefix, reversed characters, mistyped numerals etc.
